On Tuesday 1,100 gallons of toxic firefighting foam (AFFF) leaked from the Navy’s Red Hill facility. AFFF contains PFAS, a forever chemical that can cause cancer. These pictures show cleanup efforts at the site of the leak, directly above O'ahu’s primary source of drinking water. You can see AFFF darkening concrete in those photos while Red Hill workers scoop soil and concrete into barrels whilst trying to soak up toxic foam with pads. What you can’t see is one mile down: a channel leading to Halawa Stream, where the Navy flushes fuel-contaminated water.
