In 1997, a Child Protection Unit policeman based in Khayelitsha made a life-changing decision.
He arrested and then shot dead the man who had raped his six-year-old daughter.
He would be sentenced to nine years behind bars for doing so - by then Judge, later CJ Sandile Ngcobo. Interviews with the policeman, who was himself a survivor of child abuse, revealed he had an extraordinary record of ensuring that child rapists were caught and went to jail.
But his own experience of the justice system meant he knew that, more often than not, it fails victims.

On 7 June 1985, the Eastern Cape SANDF sent a secret signal to the State Security Council recommending the urgent “permanent removal from society” of Goniwe, Calata and Goniwe’s nephew, Mbulelo.

Her killers stated that they did not have evidence to prosecute her and that they could not release her, and so decided to kill her.
