Last night on @ABC, we talked about Michigan's Prop 3, "Reproductive Freedom for All" which passed by a significant margin yesterday (similar initiatives passed in CA & VT, while anti-abortion measures failed in KY & MT). Quick 🧵 about the upcoming midterm elections. In 2014, turnout for the midterms was abysmally low. Overall turnout was 36%. Among voters 18-29, the number was *20%* 1/ Going into that election, things looked tight. But at least in part as a result of turnout, Republicans took control of the Senate. That meant Mitch McConnell became Senate majority leader. 2/

Was just re-reading the 1992 Casey concurrence by Justice Blackmun, author of Roe:
“Three years ago, four Members of this Court appeared poised to ‘cast into darkness the hopes and visions of every woman in this country’ who had come to believe that the Constitution (1/5) guaranteed her the right to reproductive choice. All that remained between the promise of Roe and the darkness of the plurality was a single, flickering flame. . . . In light of tonight’s reports about the scores of WH staffers still on interim security clearances, here’s a quick thread on background investigations and WH security clearances, b/c there’s a lot of confusion out there. 1/ As everyone now knows, background investigations on WH staffers are conducted by the FBI (OPM does most others in govt). The results of those investigations are reports known as BIs. BIs typically serve a few distinct functions. Two are relevant here. 2/
