So, one question I’ve gotten a lot re: this piece is how I can possibly say that Trump et al aren’t taking this stuff seriously, and I think the answer is interesting/ worth unpacking (🧵) This is the relevant section. Basically, the way DHS chooses to present information about its activities is a problem. ICE agents getting caught on video acting like they’re cosplaying as Rambo-meets-the bully from a 1980s teen comedy? Also a problem! Image

probably an unpopular opinion (at least in this milieu), but I think the people making a "consent" issue out of this are doing something much more corrosive to both the child's well-being and society at large than the relative who insists on the perfunctory hug hello Image I was like "man I should write about this" only to remember that of course I already did Image

Flashback to my days as a teen advice columnist, trying not to be exasperated as I explained to some girl for the 1000th time that being asked out is not an insult!

Whoever started this particular trend I hope they’re somewhere accidentally closing a drawer on their finger My only quibble with OP is that Gen Z women were told by emotionally maladjusted millennials that guys expressing interest is “creepy” and should be met with opprobrium, and I think a lot of them believed it

First brush with the coconut-tree-in-bio crowd has me thinking about the flaw in fandom politics, which is: it is fueled by rhetoric that is participatory fun for people already in the fandom, but categorically not persuasive to people outside it "It's a binary choice!"
"We have to stop Trump at any cost!"
"Your privilege is showing!"
The only people who find this compelling are people who are already in the bag for Harris. The problem is *there are not enough of them*

This is a memory.

It's August on Deer Isle. The tide has pulled back to expose the rocks draped with yellowish seaweed, clustered with barnacles like crowded teeth. I'm 9 years old and wearing one sneaker; my other foot, bare, is caked in mud that goes up to my knee. If you stepped in the wrong place at low tide, a sulfur-stinking sinkhole would swallow your leg to mid-shin and keep your shoe when you yanked it free. I stepped wrong, which is why, in this memory, my uncle Paul is carrying me, piggyback, back to shore.

this thread is salty but does a good job of illuminating why, for small business owners who were forcibly closed during the pandemic and are likely still struggling, the Democrats playing "gotcha" over PPP loans is fairly galling also worth noting that a decent number of small business owners were forced to close in March 2020, jumped through all the necessary hoops to get PPP loans, but were denied compensation for red-tapey reasons, resulting in the permanent loss of their livelihoods

extremely rude under the circumstances! absolutely huge design flaw in the Apple Watch, a device I otherwise love, that you can’t stop it from scolding you to get more exercise when you’re too sick to move

this is pretty remarkable common response and no doubt there's some truth to it, but given the correlations between vaccine status and class, I suspect it's a *little* more complicated

folks on the TL talking about loss of trust in authority & experts, & I think some ppl really don’t remember the speed with which the 2020 narrative shifted from “your outdoor funeral is a superspreader event” to “let’s celebrate these protests that look a lot like block parties” like, this bit of grandstanding by de Blasio was *two weeks* before he publicly defended the protests as a moral imperative; you don’t have to be some kind of crazy reactionary to find this jarring or see it as deleterious to his credibility
