Starting a new thread that is hopefully (slightly) less depressing and more constructive.

Advice to a younger version of myself:

If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable and you either a) dont feel comfortable telling them or b) told them and they dont care

RUN AWAY

1/n Your discomfort is a signal that a boundary (even one you have not articulated to yourself) has been crossed.

You owe it to yourself to listen to this discomfort. It is a survival signal.

Seek to work with those with whom interactions feel safe, effortless and clear.

Every situation is different but even now as a senior faculty member, I feel a visceral reaction to any tone dismissing or discrediting sexual harassment.

1/n When I was an undergrad, I was sexually harassed. Complaints about inappropriate behavior made the postdoc I worked for would send me home without pay. Any day that I complained was a day I couldn’t earn wages. 2/n

Sometimes forget to be grateful to be a US citizen, but got talking w @aa_fenton about how our parents immigrated to America, and it reminded me to hold on to the inspiration and courage our parents had:

Today, @NIMHgov Implicit Bias Awareness education, @HannahValantine gave a fantastic talk about actionable strategies to "Block Bias."

One tip is to use a structured interview.

Vague criteria (such as Overall Attitude/Vibe/Fit, etc.) allow bias to be expressed. 1/n @NIMHgov @HannahValantine Recommendation letters (and Promotion letters!) often have biased language that can hurt the candidates.
