🧵

I have osteoarthritis. I have it in my ankle, my knees, my hips, my back, and my neck. And the main reason I have it is poverty. I grew up poor. My dad worked in construction, and my mum ended up becoming a nurse as I became a preteen. We lived in government housing for several years. My family moved to a different province to get away from the poverty.

Conservative politicians cut taxes so they can give their rich donors more money. After all, taxes are applied to profits, not revenue, and lower taxes means more profits.

But that doesn’t sell well with the public, so they tell us that low taxes creates jobs. Except tax cuts don’t create jobs. Let me explain.

Companies hire more workers because the demand for the products or services they sell is greater than what the current number of workers can produce. Hiring more workers means they can produce more.

You know how every time Pride Month comes around with the parades and coloured crosswalks, you start seeing comments like, “I don’t care if you’re gay, just don’t shove your sexuality in my face.”?

Well, I’ve been thinking about that. See, straight people like this don’t actually care if queer people march in parades.

Here in Lethbridge, for example, our annual summer fair kicks off with a parade, and I bet there are a few queer people in that parade. And these straight people don’t care.

Reproductive justice isn’t just about making sure abortions are accessible to those who need them

It’s also making birth control freely available for those who don’t want to be pregnant in the first place. It’s also providing comprehensive sex education so people can make informed choices regard reproduction.

I recently came to the realization as to why conservatives are so intent on having one parent (usually the mother) staying home.

🧵 First of all, the idea of a stay-at-home parent is a recent one. Throughout most of human history, parents worked together to manage their household, both working to perform the labour necessary to care for their children and home.

🧵

Today is International Women’s Day.

Let’s remember on this day, that without women’s labour, the economy would fall apart. Sure, the fact that 47% of Canada’s workforce 25 years old and older, for example, are women is part of that point. If they all walked off the job, we’d have to somehow virtually double the men in the workforce. And that’s not including females under 25.

🧵 I’ve posted a few articles over the last few days highlighting the white supremacy and far right agenda inherent in the so-called Freedom Movement.

For convenience, I thought I’d include them in a single thread. There’s this article from @antihateca

Thread:

Debt is often seen as a bad thing.

And, frankly, I don’t blame people. I personally hate being in debt, owing people money. I don’t like owing thousands of dollars in business debt for a business that no longer exists. Or tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Or thousands of dollars in consumer debt from living off credits cards after being laid off twice in a 3-year period. And so on.

The left needs to do more to embrace religion.

And by that, I don’t mean that all leftists should go to church. What I mean is that I think the left, in general, is too dismissive of religion. Many of the leftists I meet see themselves as rational, with no need for God or religion. They’re often atheist and see religious people as deluded or ignorant. Or both.

No problem. I’m happy to provide a refresher. This article by David was specifically in response to one of my news stories, but neither my name nor my website was mentioned. The closest thing I got to a mention was “a blog post”.

I often hear people claim that their tax dollars shouldn’t go to this or that thing because they will never use it or they think it’s a waste of money. For example, they might say that tax dollars shouldn’t finance an art gallery or in-vitro fertilization or gender studies degrees.

From the podcast:

“Uh, @RachelNotley, workers are the backbone of our economy. Jot that down.” “Small businesses is basically the capitalism that people want to believe is out there in the world making our economy run—being the back bone of our economy—rather than the reality, which is huge conglomerates and monopoly capitalism running the game.”

It’s so weird that people assume that government spending is wasteful. They insist that their “tax dollars” be spent efficiently. They want to make sure the $4000 in income tax that was deducted from their paycheque last year was used to buy the right asphalt for the road they drive on or something.

Capitalists don’t care that for many people, wages aren’t high enough to sustain a decent lifestyle, one where you don’t have to worry about how you’ll pay your bills or where you next meal will come from.

They don’t care that low wages reduces purchasing power of consumers. They don’t care that raising wages would lead to increased consumption and thereby increased revenue for companies.

They don’t care because they solved that problem. They solved it by giving everyone credit.

It seems to me that some politicians and their supporters often frame oil and gas projects in generic ways to generate buy in from the public. For example, they might say that a particular project will create jobs. They might say that it’ll generate tax revenue, which then can be used to build schools and hospitals.

Except these are poor reasons to support any one specific oil and gas project.
