There is a long tradition of this sort of thing at the Times. In 1970, @NYMag published a story by Edwin Diamond about a “cabal” at the paper, led by reporters and editors who felt the paper’s emphasis on objectivity kept it from accurately reflecting the state of the world. One spark for the cabal was the @nytimes treatment of the Black Panther party, which, in the opinion of the cabalists, over-emphasized the Panthers' violent rhetoric and glossed over their community free breakfast program. I bought my mom a Ruth Bader Ginsburg magnet for Christmas. This was not her primary gift—I just happened to see it when we stopped in the Clinton Library gift shop in Little Rock on our way to mom’s house. Her bun is the actual magnet. It’s cute. Anyway, that’s not the point: When I stuck it on my mom’s fridge, a relative of mine—a smart relative, with two graduate degrees—said “Who’s that?” I said, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg.” She said, “Who’s that?"

@LeanderAlphabet @michael_k I wish your thread were actually threaded. It was a pain to track it down and scroll backward, but I blame Twitter, not you… @LeanderAlphabet @michael_k I’ll add my own story to that though, which I suppose you probably know, but we’re not talking in private, are we? And I don’t know how much @LeanderAlphabet knows.

I’m going to have thoughts on this, I know it. But it will have to wait. You have to look at who “we” is when you’re answering the question “Do we need J-schools.” Almost invariably “we” refers to aspiring professional journalists.
