Jaw on the floor listening to SD planning commissioner @mcboomhower light up a neighborhood group opposing a new duplex. "When you say 'pride of ownership' that means 'we don't want renters. If you can't afford to buy in our lovely little neighborhood, we don't want you here.'" It gets better: "Frankly, the way the La Jolla planning group has approached this appeal illustrates everything wrong with community planning groups. The role of community planning groups is not to preserve the status quo under glass. It is to provide feedback...on development."

I've been asked for my views on the "split roll" initiative, which would partially repeal Prop 13 and assess certain commercial and industrial property at their current assessed values for property tax purposes. So here are my INITIAL impressions, subject to change: Let's start with the obvious: Prop 13 SUX. It has completely decimated local governments' ability to fund basic services, and forced them to rely on fees and gimmicks that raise the cost of housing and reduce governmental accountability, to put it mildly.

I'm here in @LakeForestCA tonight to advocate for 80 units of 100% affordable housing. In general public comment, residents are REALLY angry about the homelessness problem and want the city to DO SOMETHING. Will they stay and support affordable housing? @LakeForestCA City attorney says that Lake Forest has joined a coalition of cities to seek Supreme Court review of Martin v. Boise, which prohibits cities from enforcing anti-camping laws if they have not provided homeless shelters.
