Bay area robotics people, I'm going to need you to show up to city hall.

SFPD wants to authorize robots to shoot to kill. This is a very bad idea. If anyone would like to put together a letter to @sfbos please reach out to me.

Alright, real talk. I used to work on a defense research contract to lay the groundwork for this. This product is for the defense department, full stop. To be honest it doesn't bother me. theverge.com/2019/2/24/1823… The reason it doesn't bother me is I understand why they wanted to build it. Military training is expensive and most training conditions recruits to shoot people, when they shouldn't. The best live fire training has pop up targets. The military wants this to end.

One of the biggest failures I see in junior ML/CV engineers is a complete lack of interest in building data sets. While it is boring grunt work I think there is so much to be learned in putting together a dataset. It is like half the problem. Our own vision is so full of perception hacks that you really don't see what you're actually looking at. Moreover, taking one or two samples and saying, "oh yeah, that's the problem" is fraught with sample bias.
