Alabama plans to execute Demetrius Frazier with nitrogen gas on Feb. 6. His lawyers are staging the usual challenges re: the constitutionality of suffocation by nitrogen, but they also tried something different: appealing to an abolition state to step in and stop the execution. They alleged that Frazier, who confessed to the crime that put him on Alabama's death row while he was incarcerated for other crimes in Michigan, is being illegally detained by Alabama and should be returned to Michigan, which abolished the death penalty in 1964.
