WTF is "The Merge" 🧐

I wrote a whole blog post that got deleted 😤

So just doing a thread... "The Merge" refers to the Ethereum blockchain changing its consensus mechanism.

Instead of using "proof of work" (PoW), it will now use "proof of stake" (PoS).

What does that mean?

- Gasoline cars have annual smog tests
- Electric cars do not

Why are they regulated differently?

Because regulation is tailored to technology - If I take a plane that's regulated by the FAA
- If I take a car that's regulated by NHTSA

Why is travel regulated differently?

Because regulation is specific to technologies

As some of you know, I’m currently being sued (personally) in a putative class action lawsuit.

I can’t speak about it publicly because the litigation is ongoing but I want to share some context and ask for your help. The lawsuit was previously covered in the Wall Street Journal.

The allegations lack merit but a thorough defense is still needed. This is quite costly, especially for a small company like PoolTogether Inc.

1/ Here's my thread on what undergirds my work in web3 and the blockchain future I'm fighting for. 2/ First, people say "technology is neutral". I don't agree. Technology can be used for good or bad purposes but it's always bent in a direction.

The new @PoolTogether_ is live.

Here's why I think it's finally the right version and ready for mainstream consumer adoption. First off, why hasn't it happened yet?

Despite being 1) a first DeFi protocol 2) well loved and 3) massively popular in traditional finance, PoolTogether hasn't seen exponential growth.

There are two core reasons.

1/ 6 months ago @pleasrDAO emerged from a simple belief:

It’s better to own NFTs as a community than individually

Since that time @PleasrDAO has spent $15 million communally collecting the most culturally and historically important NFTs. 2/ Today the natural progression of community ownership continues with the fractionalization of the DOGE NFT.

Enabling anyone to own a piece of the most iconic internet meme.

A lot of misunderstanding around UNI tokens, the protocol and the company.

Hopefully this image helps clarify.

The Uniswap protocol exists on Ethereum, it exists independent of any "interface" you might use to access it. There are LOTS of interfaces. Image The UNI token governs the protocol that lives on Ethereum.

Token holders vote on any changes to the protocol.

Token holders DO NOT control any of the interfaces.

❤️ PSA on crypto, taxes, and making donations (for USA people) ❤️

Donating in crypto is an amazing deal from a tax standpoint.. here are the reasons & how 1/ Say you bought 1 BTC at $5,000 you can donate that today and take a tax deduction for the current value of that BTC -- $19,000!

If you sold that BTC and gave away $19,000 in cash you would pay capital gains tax and lose a bunch of money.

1/ Quick thoughts for crypto twitter on open vs. closed source. I'm the founder of @PoolTogether_ . I consider myself fairly technical but I'm not an engineer. I've also never worked on anything open source or built on crypto. 2/ I decided early on to keep @PoolTogether_ closed source. Didn't seem like a big deal to me and just made sense from a business perspective given the importance of economies of scale and the ease of copying the concept.
