This small print, sneaked out today under a cloud of Tory sleaze, shows Johnson’s so-called cap on care costs is an even bigger con than we initially thought. THREAD. gov.uk/government/pub… We already knew most people would be dead long before they hit the cap because it doesn’t cover board and lodging in care homes, and that at £86,000 the cap would still many people have to sell their homes to pay for their care – against everything Johnson promised.

What do we need to “fix the crisis in social care”? (I think our goal should be far more ambitious - to transform social care to enable all older and disabled people to live the life they chose - but for now let’s focus on the PMs promise) THREAD 1/ A cap on care costs - which must be set at the right level to protect the homes of people in the Midlands & North, not just London & the SE - is crucial but will not on its own “fix the crisis.” 2/

I led for @UKLabour in both Committees on Andrew Lansley’s reforms and repeatedly warned about the problems they’d create. So I’m glad @MattHancock - who voted for Lansleys legislation - now recognises the error of his ways. 1/4 But the truth is, if reorganising NHS structures improved the quality of care or patient outcomes we’d have already reached nirvana as there have been 20 reorganisations since 1999. Structural reform never delivers the outcomes people claim & are hugely costly & distracting. 2/4
