1/8 Quick 🧵
IMO we need to expand SCOTUS to better match or be representative of all Americans.

But how to make SCOTUS representative of all Americans?
By religion, gender, race/ethnicity, etc.?

Religion is a major factor in most (75%) American lives, so I'll start here. 2/8
In 1789, all 6 justices were white, male Protestants appointed by George Washington.

Historically, all of the 115 justices’ religious affiliation are:
- 91 (79%) Protestant
- 15 (13%) Catholic;
- 8 (7%) Jewish;
- 1 (< 1%) None.

1/ A Thread examining the question:

“Should schools be re-opened in the Fall?”

So far, there are few opportunities to study in situ or naturally the effects of reopening schools after the COVID pandemic.

So what do authentic authorities say? 2/ New Zealand reported:
1. "... education institutions have a limited role in reducing COVID-19 morbidity & mortality.”

2. “...closures have profound & enduring impacts on health, educational, economic & social inequities."

1/ "...opening safely, experts agree, isn’t just about the adjustments a school makes. It’s also about how much virus is circulating in the community, which affects the likelihood that students and staff will bring COVID-19 into their classrooms."
sciencemag.org/news/2020/07/s… 2/ UNICEF: schools need a plan BEFORE reopening, so what's Trump's & DeVos plan?
"Prepare with critical policies, procedures & financing plans needed to improve schooling, w/a focus on safe operations, including strengthening remote learning practices..."

1 I used to help build probabilistic models for the risks, impact, & mitigation factors for HIV/AIDS, etc.

We'd:
- look at the "real world" as accurately as possible to identify "people, places, &/or things" that were part of an ongoing problem
- translate "the nouns" -> numbers 2/
- add, subtract, multiple &/or divide these now numbered nouns to find patterns, e.g., COVID cases in different places.

How safe is it to go out?
Find your local COVID data.

E.g., my son lives in SF Bay Area w/3 surrounding counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, & Santa Clara.

Locate
- no. of COVID cases
- no. active cases
- no. of deaths

worldometers.info/coronavirus/us… 2/
And/or look for other local data, sometimes called "dashboards" to help find your data too.

1/ Coronavirus...
1 "... was more stable on plastic and stainless steel than on copper and cardboard, and viable virus was detected up to 72 hours"
2 "...remained viable in aerosols (suspended in the air) throughout the duration of our experiment (3 hrs)"
nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… 2/ Decay rates of coronavirus COVID-1 "SARS-CoV-2" & SARS "SARS-CoV-1".

COVID-19 consistently lasts longer and is more viable in the air (past 3 hours) and on various surfaces than SARS.

1/ Trump's Admin decided not to be helpful in leading us through this highly contagious & lethal COVID pandemic.
Fortunately, some states are proactive, e.g., CA, NY, etc.
abc7news.com/when-will-cali… 2/ Some states are taking the "laisse-faire" approach to manage the effects of a lethal pandemic. The false narrative is that a Darwinian approach to herd immunity is good for Wall St., Trump's & their's re-electability, corporate profits, & profiteering.

1/ 2nd COVID wave?

A 2nd wave happens during a pandemic when the disease infects one group of people first, then infections appear to decrease, & then, infections increase in a different part of the population, resulting in a second wave of infections.

2/ The dynamics of waves include peaks & valleys in the frequency & duration of outbreaks of disease.

Drivers in multi-wave epidemics are:
- antigenic drift making immunity less likely
- change in environmental conditions
- social distancing behavior

1/ Herd Immunity - what is it, why we want, & how do we do it?🐮

"When most of a population is immune to an infectious disease, this provides indirect protection—or herd immunity...to those who are not immune to the disease."
jhsph.edu/covid-19/artic… 2/ "For example, if 80% of a population is immune to a virus, four out of every five people who encounter someone with the disease won’t get sick (and won’t spread the disease any further). In this way, the spread of infectious diseases is kept under control."

How well are you coping with the stress, depressive mood, & anxiety of the COVID-19 pandemic predicts how fast you will recover from your experience when it's over.

I co-authored numerous med articles w/Dr. Folkman - one of the pioneers in coping - at UCSF.

Some findings👇 2
We all use different coping mechanisms at different times in various amounts & for various lengths of time while we simultaneously try to live with & adjust for the "major life event(s)" that affects us, e.g., prolonged illness; loss of a loved one, job/income; caregiving,...
