Not long after Jeff German — a reporter at the @reviewjournal — was slain outside of his home last fall, my editor called me with a question.
The Post had reached out, asking if we could help in some way. Jeff's editor had an idea. Maybe we could take on the last of his work.
Soon after, I flew to Las Vegas to start reporting, pairing up with the incomparable @Rookie__Rae, on visuals.
In the @reviewjournal newsroom, I saw Jeff's desk. It was neat, tidy. He'd started gathering court documents, tucking them in folders labeled in pink highlighter.

Almost three years ago, my editor called me early one November morning. A wildfire had sparked near a town called Paradise, he said. Could I go? (1/13)
The fire had ignited from a malfunctioning PG&E transmission line. That morning — under dry, powerful winds — a threadbare hook on the century-old tower snapped. It was entirely preventable. A replacement would've cost $19: tinyurl.com/c77fzfuz. (2/13)
