Ok, I promised a retrospective thread on our recent cluster hire process - what went well and what I'd do differently next time. Along with tips for other depts hoping to do similar things. LONG 🧵 1/ First, I'm so thrilled with the end result of the search. Our goal was to hire candidates who would help increase our department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their research, teaching, mentoring and/or lived experience. 2/

Updates from our open-area EDI cluster hire in Vanderbilt's dept of Psych and Human Dev. We had an amazing pool with hundreds of applicants, but we have now narrowed it down to ~15 top applicants whom we have asked for letters of recommendation. Short🧵about our process. We started by focusing on candidates diversity statements. Since the goal of the search was to improve our dept's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion we used those statements to make our first cut. Each statement was scored by at least 2 committee members.

As promised, here's the final syllabus for my Science of Misinformation seminar. It's an undergraduate course for students in the honors college so a broad mix of majors and years (~16 students). 1/

osf.io/bf263/ The class focuses on a psych perspective but includes some readings from Political Science, Communication, Comp Sci & Sociology.

This is a big field and it was really hard to narrow down the topics I wanted to focus on. (I also included 2 class choice days for student input) 2/

This is a fascinating paper - but I'd quibble with the conclusion that "incorrect responses to factual questions represent a mix of blind guessing and mistaken inferences" 1/ Along with @cvonbastian, I've been studying what I call "knowledge instability". While we say that ppl "know" or "don't know" factual information (e.g. the capital of Canada), in reality the accessibility of our general knowledge is constantly in flux. 2/

🚨New year, new working paper🚨

If you've followed this account for long you know that in laboratory studies repetition increases belief.

When you hear something twice you're more likely to think that it's true. But it that true outside the lab? 1/

psyarxiv.com/r85mw In the current study we use a larger number of repetitions (16), more realistic timing of the repetitions (across two weeks), and more naturalistic exposures (text messages) to better examine how repetition affects belief in real-world settings. 2/

10 years today

It's been 10 yrs since my mom died, ~1 month after this pic at my PhD graduation

Many of you know that my dad is a professor, but you might not have known that I came from a family of two academics

Some thoughts and remembrances for my mom Barbara Byrd Fazio 1/? My mom started as a preschool teacher and had a MA in early childhood ed from Rutgers and a BA from Cornell. Her passion for effective early education for all students was present throughout her life.

Her teacher Halloween costumes provided me with a great dress up box as a kid

I just got to move a paper on my projects Trello board from under review to in press (yay, @clairmkhong!) and I thought others (especially new profs) might like to see how I use Trello to keep myself organized. 1/N

#newprof #newPI Note, the system isn't perfect, it's just what works well for me. You can and should modify it for your needs. 2/
