Many talks with colleagues who knew Lara Logan when she was a 60 Minutes contributor and Iraq correspondent. The question keeps coming up ‘What happened?’. If you track her public statements though it’s the sadly typical journey to conspiracy we see in the US. A crisis of truth. It leads to this larger and important question: if someone can be part of the high priesthood of straight journalism and end up talking about Democrats and babies blood, what can be done? She’s not just some sad anomaly or someone with ‘mental health issues’.

Liz Truss gone - shortest tenure ever. Completely bananas. And another leadership election without the vote of the British public? complete chaos. How can the Conservative party with a straight face not go to a general election?

I found this a fascinating read about his absolute confidence in the view that he alone can provide for his workers. We’ve seen in every statistic possible that the decimation of the labor movement in the US has been bad for workers writ large. washingtonpost.com/business/2022/… Listening tours are great. But if you are not talking to those who are driven to start a union, then you aren’t listening?

Hi 👋🏼 I know there is a lot happening that’s bad right now. But I wanted to talk about something good that’s been life-changing for me. As I’ve said before, the pandemic was really hard for me. Like much of America I suffered mentally and that manifested physically… In short, I gained a lot of weight. For me that’s a problem because I’ve always suffered from obesity. It’s a disease that is about your body’s inability to store fat in a healthy way. But the way society sees it is as a willpower issue. Many doctors too.

A team representing @NAHJ @NABJ interviewed @JoeBiden for almost an hour yesterday. A lot of news there but my takeaway was the specific outline of his plan to dismantle the Trump agenda. More soon on the wall, tarriffs and if he took THAT test.

In our @NAHJ @NABJ interview with @JoeBiden we ask him about cognitive decline and if he has taken THAT test. Hear his answer:

The economy will not recover while the virus is being passed exponetially on from one person to another. Leave aside the moral reasons (we are not a death cult). Practically, having employees and customers get sick (maybe die?) seems like a faulty business plan. I was just in rural Virginia on a reporting trip. The head of the regional community health service there said we need a FEDERAL plan with CLEAR communication from medical EXPERTS, who have a public health COORDINATED response.

Meanwhile in #Panama, a woman who was in quarantine was fined 50-thousand dollars for going to the supermarket while waiting for her test results. midiario.com/nacionales/mul… They have a national ID in Panama, and contact tracing and so when she tried to pay it was alerted to the cashier that she should actually be at home and the supermarket called the police.

I wish I hadn’t heard ‘more accessible’ or ‘less racialized’ or or..’Screenshots of messages from editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport shooting down a pitch from a Puerto Rican food columnist, Illyanna Maisonet, under the argument of seeking more “accessible” content circulated online’ The thing here is that for so long in the media the gate-keepers have been allowed to pass up stories from POC by using language like that, using their (white) ‘judgement’ that their perceived (white) ‘audience’ wouldn’t find it ‘accessible’.

We had two big pieces today from @ChildrensNatl where we were granted exclusive access. This story takes you into the Pedeatric ICU where the doctors and nurses are helping kids with multi system Inflammatory Syndrome in Childten. DC is ground zero npr.org/2020/05/31/866… Though rare, the resources that it takes to care for each little patient are huge. This is the PICU where doctors have to take extra precautions each time they leave a patient’s room

This is one of the clearest explanations of the highest risk environments for infection. ‘The main sources for infection are home, workplace, public transport, social gatherings, and restaurants. This accounts for 90% of all transmission events.’ erinbromage.com/post/the-risks… The key takeaway is how long you spend in these places and their ventilation. It’s a fascinating read. Going to the grocery store not a problem if you protect yourself. Runners also not a problem. It’s what you are doing and how much time you spend in a place that’s at issue.

Really happy for all the love for @NPRWeekend!There a lot happening behind the scenes. We are all working from home. That means a complex system of recording and communication between guests, host, producers and editors. It takes a vast network of smart people to get this to air. Let me start today with who was in the control room. @NPRNedWharton directed the show. @stu_rush was our engineer. 👏

This message showed up in my family text group back in March. I called it out as disinformation maybe seeded by someone outside the country and was called to task for embarrassing the sender (more)nytimes.com/2020/04/22/us/… I often tell people that they have to act like fact-checkers in their own social media community. In reality this is hard. You become the downer, the person who is always complaining or embarrassing people. Why does it matter people ask.

True story - husband walks dog, goes past neighbor’s house and they are having a party with 20 people drinking beer with no social distancing and no masks. Yesterday, loads of people walking dogs with no masks closely chatting on corners. Meanwhile, sirens. So many sirens. I say this because while I have been inspired at the heroism of some at this time, others are just damn selfish.

In our interview with @GovPritzker chief of staff @anacaprana on how states are being forced to bid against each other for critical supplies, she mentioned that venture capital funds are making $$$ profiting off this pandemic. How is that right? npr.org/2020/04/12/832… “The current system is a total mess. States are bidding against each other, they are bidding against other nations … as my boss (Gov. J. B. Pritzger) has said over and over it really is the wild wild west.”

Human Family by Maya Angelou

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

Been thinking alot about what this pandemic has shown is vital and what isn't. Love to hear your thoughts. Mine are: School. Vital. Long distance learning especially for younger kids or kids with issues is just so hard. Also, for only children. Isolation from peers is awful. NOT Vital for Many Industries: Big expensive buildings to work in. Long non flexible work hours. Office culture that punches clocks.
