This isn’t a good thing, but it illustrates that this admin has consolidated governing in the Oval more than any other. Cabinet officers under Biden have administrative responsibilities and a few are given situational comms roles. The latter is prioritized above the former, with Buttigieg epitomizing this emphasis.

Would love more analysis of how these fit together and less fighting over the word “recession” like it was some sort of incantation. But I see more cause for concern than cause for elation. Public opinion on the economy/direction of the country is VERY negative right now. I’m seeing right track/wrong track numbers I haven’t seen in a long time. Economic optimism doesn’t look good either. There’s serious simmering resentment across the whole electorate.

China, not Russia, is America’s greatest geopolitical foe. China is an existential threat. Russia is a problem to be managed in proportion to its power, which is a shadow of China’s. Foreign policy should be guided first, foremost, and always by these facts. Obama was arrogant, naive, and inept. The Russians took him for a ride repeatedly as a result. His reply to Romney was glib and stupid. He should be mocked for it. But the people calling Russia America’s Enemy #1 are simply wrong.

In the unlikely event of a full on Russian blitz to Kiev, there would be immense pressure to at least use American air power over Ukraine. To pretend otherwise is untenable. If escalation remains contained to the Donbas then all of this is over the top anyway. The ship sailed on Ukrainian territorial integrity in 2014 when we let a frozen conflict develop in Donetsk and Luhansk. Maybe we should have. Maybe we shouldn’t have. Doesn’t matter. What’s done is done. What matters is what Russia intends to do BEYOND the Donbas.

No statewide elected Democrat in America has acknowledged that Abrams lost in 2018 when asked. Most have supported her claim that she lied. Hell, this year the Macker refused to say she lost, that John Kerry lost, or that Al Gore lost. Macker’s views are not out of the norm for leading elected Democrats. They just rarely get asked.

There will be attempts to rationalize this as, somehow, the fault of previous administrations. It isn’t. Very tempted to do a Regionalist appreciation thread. Ironically, you don’t get Pollock without the Regionalists who trained him. And this dichotomy, if it can even be called that, is a story of western artists confronting an eastern taste-making establishment. What the quoted tweet above nails is that Regionalism gets pigeonholed as reactionary anachronistically - a kind of chronological flattening to suggest that AE and Regionalist artists are rough contemporaries when...they're not.

People are sharing the John Stewart Crossfire clip from that Lincoln Project goon who knew about Weaver and helped cover it up and also almost certainly broke campaign finance law. So I’m not gonna retweet it and give him any more attention. But I have some thoughts. BLUF: the post-Stewart cancellation of Crossfire was a tragedy for cable news and, given its outsized influence on our politics, a bad day for American democracy. Stewart’s preening self-righteousness doubtlessly spoke to many people sick of partisanship but it had toxic effects.

Tanden is uniquely ill-suited to OMB. Good Directors cultivate senatorial trust in the executive branch’s budget calculations as a basis for legislation. That’s why it requires confirmation, unlike, say, NSA. Nominating a toxic conspiracy theorist was stupid. The existence of CBO is, in some sense, a refutation of OMB’s design. Hence the emphasis on regulatory preclearance, for which Tanden is also ill-prepared, as it requires lots of intra-coalition brokering. It does not require wine-drunk tweet fights with socialist grad students.

The Senate can't dismiss the articles. But, just as the House declined to notify the Senate of impeachment, the Senate can decline to adopt an order notifying the House it is prepared to accept managers, thus stalling impeachment indefinitely. All this is stupid, however. Basically, the Senate can do the same asinine thing back to the House that Tribe told the House to do. As this entire impeachment has been a partisan clown show from the start, it would be in keeping with the idiocy to date.

I’d really like to know why Biden felt Hunter needed to go with him on visits and fly on the same plane. What did he believe his son was doing in Ukraine and China? I say this because it goes to the heart of the matter: Hunter Biden is a shady guy with no marketable skills other than being Joe Biden’s son. If Joe knew about Hunter’s business, that’s a bad reason to fly him. If Joe didn’t know, then why did he bring him along?
