Many leftists perceive their abstract antagonists - "the bourgeoisie" - as being like their Father: conservative, trad, patriotic, God fearing, rugged, individualist, & irrationally opposed to rational progress. This is their (sub)conscious archetype, not based within reality The truth is the ruling classes have nearly always been the opposite: progressive, "avant garde", skeptical, rational, class conscious, & cosmopolitan. I think this is perfectly demonstrated with Gloria Steinem's attitude towards the CIA, an enforcement arm of the ruling class:
