Many large employers have chosen to utilize a method called "self-funding" to achieve significant cost reductions on the health insurance plans they make available to their employees. "Self-funding" is the basis of the "single-payer" paradigm used in most advanced countries to provide, at a worst case cost of 1/9 of their economies (and in many cases much less) health care that is equal to or better than that which consumes 1/6 of the U.S. economy.
