Having been in high level academic settings, one thing that always struck me was that a great many of the students, while clearly high IQ, entirely lacked vision and spirit. They could not abstractly appreciate grand designs or great men. It’s as if they lacked that mental module.
They’re why so much of “elite human capital” is ultimately just fetishization of effective bureaucracy, providing no normative direction. These people, the heartless intellects, can carry out the projects of others with great skill.

Fired this off right when I saw Musk’s comment about the Great Replacement, but some further explanation is warranted. Musk says he is worried about birthrates for ‘civilizational’ reasons. What does that mean? At some level it is a basic matter of numbers…
TFR of 1.8 kids per woman means a given population halves in 8 generations. TFR of 1.4 means the population halves in 3 generations, and by 10 generations it will have declined by 95%. At 1.4, it effectively completely vanishes after two centuries.
