A claim that BBC deliberately edited out the booing of Boris Johnson yesterday is gaining massive traction. To debunk: there is nothing sinister going on. They're replaying the earlier footage with the natural sound dipped so as not to drown out the live interview. That's it. As someone who's worked at a news channel, I can confirm it's standard practice. The overlaid footage is known as b-roll or cover and the nat sound on it is always dipped when interviews are being conducted.

The situation in Ethiopia is the most pressing disaster in the world right now. In recent days, it has finally gotten more attention and made a splash in CNN and the NY Times.

But it needs more. The conflict in Tigray has been going on since Nov, thousands have been killed, hundreds of thousands forced from their homes and the UN says 2 million people are in need of food aid. I understand why people are pleased with Trump's ban given the clear danger his tweeting posed. But we should be careful about cheerleading the unprecedented political power of unaccountable tech companies who hold a near monopoly on the distribution of information. Both Twitter and Facebook knew which way the wind was blowing and they acted out of self-interest, as they always do. It's not about accuracy of information. Facebook, in monopolizing distribution and then strangling news orgs with its algorithms, has already proven that.

Ethiopian police have arrested Reuters journalist Kumerra Gemechu. I know Kumerra and he is an excellent and professional journalist who has worked for Reuters as a cameraman for 10 years. No reason has been given for his arrest. uk.reuters.com/article/uk-eth… Per Reuters: "Around 10 armed federal police officers arrived at Kumerra’s home ... and took him away in handcuffs in front of his wife and three children, his wife Hawi Desalegn said. She added that his eldest daughter, who is 10, clung to him screaming as he was led away."

Swelling with pride for my home country. Croke Park is a hugely symbolic place for us and Eid prayers taking place there is surely also a symbol - of a nation evolving with confidence and embracing its growing diversity.
