I have a formal ASD/autism diagnosis (not Aspergers) and I am firmly in the #SelfDxIsValid camp.

I was never self-dx. I would never have thought to look into being Autistic or seeking an evaluation except that someone who knows me VERY well & has Autistic kids suggested it. I only had one evaluation (no "doctor shopping") and I easily easily easily got my autism diagnosis because I am THAT obviously and stereotypically Autistic.

AND it was 100% a privilege that I got that evaluation and diagnosis.

War on Autism by Anne McGuire Chapter 5 - Collateral Damage: Normalizing Violence and the Violence of Normalcy.

My chapter 4 summary as well as the links to all my previous chapter summaries can be found here:

The intro and first section entitled "Living With Autism" mostly look at the phrasing of "living with" autism.

This is a very common phrase, used not only to describe those of us who are #ActuallyAutistic, but also those who are in our lives in one way or another.

On to chapter 3 (Act NOW) of War on Autism by Anne McGuire!

Truly, if you find any of my summaries/quotes from the book interesting, I highly recommend reading the entire thing. I'm not at all doing it justice - there's so much more in here than I can possibly cover. Chapter 3 begins with an overview of the "bewareness" statement on Starbucks cups that Autism $peaks' founder wrote in 2007.

McGuire talks a fair amount about time here. The time mentioned in the A$ statement which is partly about how frequently autism diagnosis happens,

On to Chapter 2 of War on Autism by Anne McGuire!

This is a continuation of a thread that starts here with thoughts from and about the introduction and Chapter 1:

The first section talks about the connection between the modern role of "autism advocate" and how Autistic people are viewed (as people "with" autism). Modern ("good") autism advocacy is positioned "against" autism and is pro "nonautism" or "normalcy."

I just started reading the War on Autism by Anne McGuire. It is excellent, but I've also wanted to cry a half dozen times already and I'm not through the introduction yet. And because the author quotes it in the War on Autism introduction and reminded me how much I loved reading it the first time, I'm rereading this amazing piece: dsq-sds.org/article/view/3…
