(Thread 1/10) It's not enough to be sorry when your work is used to attack journalists in "inconvenient" countries. Journalism research has no integrity if it endangers journalists at risk. How did this "study" fare in South Africa @brankobrkic? Or in Brazil @camposmello? (2/6) After 4 years of behind-the-scenes feedback with no substantive changes and no acknowledgement of its harms, you have to ask - what is the purpose of this research? Of the bar graphs that are meant to get attention at our expense. From last year: rappler.com/voices/thought…

(2/9) Kasi naman po, about 6 months before these ridiculous charges, the government gave Rappler a top corporate tax payer award. So medyo nabaliktad po ang mundo. But …

(1/9) Today, my fellow Nobel laureate #dmitrymuratov and I are proud to launch an action plan to tackle the information crisis unleashed by Big Tech & rebuild independent journalism. Here’s why: (2/9) The huge potential of technology to advance our societies has been hijacked by #BigTech and a business model that deliberately promotes hate & hate & lies for profit.

(Thread 1/5) Fascinating to watch the info ops/mob over the weekend. Data downloaded for study by research groups. If I go to jail unjustly, Filipino citizens lose far more than I do. Let me lay out what can happen to YOU if you're Filipino: (2/5) 1. Retroactive application of the law. Story was published before the law. That can happen to you too; 2. Prescription of online libel magically changed from 1 year to 12 years. That can happen to you too (and there are a lot of those in the disinfo networks);

(1/6) Information operations now moving against me, cementing "journalist=criminal." Keng's lawyers and the Palace have similar messaging: it's the media attacking a "private individual. This isn't true. Please help me spread my response below. @rapplerdotcom #CourageON (2/6) 1. The intelligence report was vetted by a senior investigative journalist, Aries Rufo (whose book is often quoted by President Duterte); 2. Not all intel reports are equal. One PDEA document sent by Keng's lawyers was signed by an officer embroiled in a graft suit ...

(1/4) Good morning from Manila!! Infinite thanks to so many people. Here and around the world. I've been inundated the past few days. I'm stunned that Judge Montesa ignored the legal acrobatics that made this case possible. Our search for justice continues. #HoldTheLine (2/4) The barely veiled contempt in the decision for me and Rappler truly makes me wonder, tearing apart nearly 35 years of my professional life. I like how even my title, which we chose in 2012 when we created @rapplerdotcom is "a clever ruse" rappler.com/nation/263876-…

(Thread 1/7) Good afternoon from Manila! "For the first time in history we can track the evolution of a pandemic in real time. Influenza viruses are notorious for their rapid mutation and unpredictable behaviour." Dr. Margaret Chan, former WHO director general #CourageON (2/7) This is the argument for testing: what medical professionals are urging throughout the Philippines. COVID-19 spreads 2.5x more than the common cold and to see its spread, we need to TEST, TEST, TEST #CourageON: rappler.com/science-nature…

(1/5) This @60Minutes piece triggered the attack networks in PH against me & @rapplerdotcom. This was followed by #SEAGames2019. Check who they are here: rappler.com/newsbreak/inve… Then they went on to @ABSCBN, water/oligarchs @maynilad @ManilaWaterPH, then met their match with @U2 (2 of 5) Thank you, @U2 #BONO for standing up for democratic values of human rights, press freedom, inclusion. History has always shown that scorched earth policies for power always end when people stand up and demand their rights rappler.com/entertainment/…

(THREAD 1 of 7) New accounts, real people coordinated on a channel. Interesting that they targeted this tweet about Cambridge Analytica whistleblower @chrisinsilico saying PH was 'petri dish' for tactics of mass manipulation. Here's story: rappler.com/technology/soc… #ASCmediarisk (2 of 7) Most recent must-read example of govt attacks in response to PR crisis: bottom up on social media, top down from officials ... to avert fallout of incompetence & potential corruption from #SEAGames2019: rappler.com/newsbreak/inve… #ASCmediarisk

New round of attacks to take attention away from real issues. 1. They blur the difference between censorship and disinformation. #Disinfo insidiously manipulates. 2. #FactsMatter An investment is not a company's valuation! Learn more before exposing your ignorance! Censorship is a government's control to silence information it doesn't want in the public sphere. While it's been used liberally, in the constitution, only government has this power. And control like this is old world, because in age of social media, they flood with lies.
