There was a lot of hidden psychological assumptions and contradictions embedded in New Left era discourse that still tend hang over the discourse, dragging it down by its frequent lack of acknowledgement.
For a start there is the romantic - our individual capacities and gifts are being smothered by the needs of the social roles we play which are oppressive and unnatural, and without which we would presumably be psychologically healthier.
