Most women I know who have dared to speak their fears about tension between what is being asked for in the name of trans rights and what they see as women’s sex-based rights have done so with care and consideration, and only after much trepidation. Labour party women who questioned whether it was in keeping with the aim of all women’s shortlists to improve female representation in parliament to open up those shortlists to anyone who self-identifies as a woman were reported to their employers and kicked out of the party.

I’m delighted to be able to share my article, ‘Amelioration, Inclusion, and Legal Recognition: On Sex, Gender, and the UK Gender Recognition Act’, which has been published (Open Access) in the Journal of Political Philosophy. 🧵 (1/25) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… This article was prompted by the 2018 UK government consultation over proposals to reform the 2004 Gender Recognition Act to move to a system of gender self-identification. I’ve been off Twitter for a few days and realise I missed out on the great ‘2 + 2 = 5’/’trans women are women’ debate. As someone who has written and talked about both topics, I feel the need to wade in! First, credentials. Here’s me last October questioning whether 2 + 2 = 4, before it was cool:

There’s a lot to take issue with in this piece from Justin Weinberg @dailynouseditor explaining his decision not to link to the recent Quillette article on sex and gender by @docstockk . But his claim that the outcome of the Scottish Government’s consultation on the inclusion 1/ of a gender identity question in the census shows that Kathleen’s discussion is ‘scaremongering’ regarding the collection of statistics about sex is particularly egregious. To be clear: the proposal on the table was to add a third ‘non-binary’ option to the ‘sex’ question on 2/
