I don’t understand why some SLTs are so any Hegarty maths. There is a “busy culture” problem in education at times where it seems we need to justify all of our time. If you have Hegarty then you should only record videos if there isn’t a well matched video on the site imo 1/n Yes, there is a social side to teaching that we all miss and value but there are alternatives to this rather than ALL live lessons or looms as a replacement. A blend of Hegarty and online Q&A sessions is fine if the task and video are well aligned with your curriculum 2/n

Our teaching and learning handbook looks soooo good! Lots of evidence informed theory and actionable advice to improve our student outcomes. Incredible effort by all involved. Now to put it to work in our curriculum areas! Our EXCEL model for teaching and learning encompasses what great teaching is learning is all about - routines, relationships, challenge, support, modelling, explanations, questioning, learning over time, retrieval, study skills.

Thread: I am really excited about our CPD programme in our department this year - we are moving away from the generic whole school pedagogy focus and into subject specific, collaborative, curriculum focussed time. 1/n Each member has chosen an area to develop this year from a menu that supports the implementation of ideas that we were trained on last year through @WRMathsSec Jigsaw training. 2/n

THREAD: @olicav's Recount and recall - Dual coding in practice in the maths classroom.
Process: Teacher reveals diagrammatic schema piece by piece with some narration, pausing at intervals to allow student to copy the diagram. 1/n #mathschat @olicav TRACING: Students get in pairs. Each student places their finger on the page at the centre and traces along the paths. One must explain out loud what that part of the diagram is related to in as much detail as possible. The other traces and listens. 2/n

If you haven't read "Is it true that some students just can't do maths?" by @danielwillingham yet then I'd really recommend it. Some thoughts on it to follow 1/n

Doing a student voice each half term on google forms or survey monkey with your class is an excellent way to reflect on your practice on an individual and department level. Who does this? 1. Is there any entry task every lesson that tests prior learning? (Are non-negotiable in place?)
2. Do I feel I am getting better at maths this year?
