I asked ChatGPT to give me 8 pieces of advice on how to be a successful academic scientist.

The results were astounding.

Then, I probed a little deeper. 1. Set clear and specific goals for yourself and your research.

off to a good start chat buddy. what's next?

100% of research labs have LAB MEETINGS.

0% are set up to enable everyone to have a voice.

This is how we flipped them to
increase engagement
hear from everyone
and save time... Most lab meetings are run on some variation of:
-scientist presents either data or journal article
-starts with a background
-gives some results
-future directions

The end of the presentation is for questions.

Right?
Wrong.

'Selling the sawdust' is an idea that completely changed the way I approach my work.

And the beauty of this idea is that most people are already doing it, but just not realizing it Everything you do is valuable to two audiences:

1. The audience that wants the output of your work

2. The audience that wants to understand the process of your work

Had fun live-streaming a chat yesterday with @IcahnMountSinai Director of Bioinformatics @AviMaayan

Before our @tidybiology code along, Avi dropped some words of wisdom 👇

On approaches to science:

Avi Mayan builds tools to enable biological discovery. He wants to figure out “how cells work”

He is gene-agnostic & disease-agnostic, meaning he can follow science wherever it takes him

This is a tremendous advantage for genuine & impactful discovery

If you want to write better scientific papers, write them V-shaped. Early in the writing process, many authors often ask if the most exciting data of a paper should go in the beginning of the paper or the end.
