A new French study made headlines recently by claiming that beverages sold in glass bottles — including water — contained more microplastics (MPs) than those in plastic or cans. But before we all panic and abandon glass, let’s unpack the nuance. 🧵
The study, published in The Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, found that the main source of MPs wasn’t the glass itself, but the paint on the underside of metal caps — especially yellow ones. These polyester-based paints shed microplastic fragments during bottling, and even rinsing or air-blowing the caps didn’t fully prevent contamination. Some samples exceeded 100 MPs per liter — but here’s where things get slippery.
