New: Following a 5+ year legal battle, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency ruled yesterday that “Product of Israel” labels on wine from illegal Israeli settlements in the OPT are “false” and therefore violate Canadian consumer protection law. A huge blow to the pro-settler lobby. The CFIA does not provide an alternative for the labels, but says they will consult on this. It’s important that future labels identify goods as originated from illegal settlements in occupied Palestinian territory, while distinguishing them from indigenous Palestinian goods.

Nobody in their right mind would expect a joint Ukraine-Russian investigation into an alleged Russian war crime, and yet this is exactly what CIJA is demanding here. Israeli forces executed a journalist in broad daylight and must be dragged to the International Criminal Court. Israel's record of investigating itself is so atrocious that Israel's largest human rights organization @btselem now refuses to cooperate with the system in any way, calling it a "whitewash mechanism." Asking Palestinians to 'cooperate' is a huge insult. btselem.org/publications/s…

Canadian politicians condemned BDS and claimed it held Israel to a double standard. Now as everyone jumps to remove Russian liquor from shelves and applies sanction after sanction, we can all see the double standard very fucking clearly. It took two days for the LCBO to remove Russian products, but it continues to sell products from Israel, including wine produced in settlements in occupied Palestinian territory

Canada sold Saudi Arabia >$7.8 billion in weapons since 2015. At the same time, Canada provides Saudi with diplomatic cover for its murderous war on Yemen. A quick analysis of statements since 2016 shows that Canada has clearly chosen sides in this brutal war. #StopArmingSaudi I found 19 statements from Canada on the Saudi-Yemen war between 2016 and 2022. Not a single statement directly criticized Saudi Arabia, while 10 specifically condemned Houthis. See attached images for reference. #StopArmingSaudi

In 2021 there were 496 incidents of settler violence against Palestinians, as recorded by @ochaopt.

As @btselem notes, "settler violence is state violence"; that is, "a form of government policy, aided and abetted by official state authorities with their active participation." @ochaopt @btselem It's not just a few bad apples, and like usual, nobody will be held to account. "The Israeli apartheid regime and its representatives actively aid and abet the settlers’ violence as part of a strategy to cement the takeover of Palestinian land." btselem.org/settler_violen…

Desmond Tutu was a powerful and hugely respected figure in the anti-Apartheid liberation movement, and for that reason he was despised by Canada’s right-wingers. Here’s a short excerpt from a pro-South Africa document produced by the Toronto Sun’s Peter Worthington in 1986. Worthington also published this piece by William Buckley Jr. in his "Influence" magazine, which accuses Tutu of "rhetorical recklessness" for saying that support for South Africa was racist.

This idea that naming Israel as an apartheid or colonial state is "antisemitic" falls apart immediately once you realize that this language is not just used by Palestinians, but even by many of Israel's own human rights organizations. I'll list half a dozen or so below: Most well-known is @btselem, which released a report earlier this year on Israel as an apartheid regime. btselem.org/apartheid

I’d like to provide some clarity on Annamie Paul’s response to violence in the Middle East, since it clearly plays a role in the Green Party’s ongoing turmoil. Later and less substantive than the statements from other parties, it was a policy failure that deserves criticism. In early May, Israel conducted violent raids on Al Aqsa and threatened mass expulsions in Sheikh Jarrah. By the time that Annamie Paul commented on May 10, Marc Garneau, Jagmeet Singh, and 30+ MPs had already raised their concerns about these matters.

Just this year, the word "Apartheid" has been adopted to describe Israel by @btselem, @hrw, the post-apartheid governments of South Africa and Namibia, and two former Israeli ambassadors to South Africa.

Canada rejects the word "categorically."

Whose opinion would you trust? In fact, 45% of those living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea believe “apartheid” is an appropriate term, including *a quarter of Jewish Israelis* btselem.org/press_releases…

'Honest Reporting Canada' is urging @usask to censor @usasksheaf (presumably via withholding fees) in retaliation for publishing an article that quotes Palestinian Canadians. They also say that naming Zionism as settler-colonialism violates IHRA. This censorship must be rejected. This @nationalpost story, published 1 hour ago, repeats the discredited false story of a ‘lone middle-aged Jewish man’ being surrounded and attacked by Palestine supporters. He’s in the fascist JDL! He was in a group! HE’S HOLDING A KNIFE IN THE PHOTO THEY ATTACHED TO THE STORY Here’s the real story from @antihateca. Shameful to see the @NationalPost spinning an incident started by armed, fascist, anti-Palestinian thugs and trying to use that to slander a demonstration of 13-15,000 people protesting Israeli violence. So here’s a thing: @CIJAinfo is hiring a full-time staff person to run Canadian content for Act(.)IL, the creepy anti-BDS propaganda app promoted and partially funded by the Israeli government. I’ve been tracking its “missions” for years at @AntiBDSApp. I guess I'll do a thread.. I wrote about the launch of Israel’s anti-BDS app in 2017 for @jacobinmag, and how it weaponizes social media to covertly defend Israel from criticism, while creating the illusion of organic support

New comments from NDP leader @theJagmeetSingh on BDS:

👎 “I don’t support it”
👎 “I do not believe it is a path to peace” but has the “opposite effect”
👎 “It is not [the NDP’s] path forward and it will not be”

Remember when he pretended to be pro-Palestine? lol In this round table with CIJA, Singh also:
👎 says when people “single out” Israel it has to “indicate antisemitism”
👎 seems to equate anti-Zionism with antisemitism
👎 boosts false attacks on campus activists (esp York)

Dave Rubin is going on Tucker Carlson tonight, to talk about his upcoming fundraising event for a Canadian political party which espouses white nationalist views, has connections to neo-Nazis and militias, and whose candidates include Qanon bloggers & 9/11 truthers. "The former leader of a U.S. neo-Nazi group, a former Soldiers of Odin member and a Pegida Canada official were among those whose signatures were submitted to Elections Canada last year to officially register the People’s Party of Canada, records show." globalnews.ca/news/5929770/f…

In 1979, the African National Congress sent this discussion document to all units in exile: "Problems of Social Behaviour in Our Movement."

They were concerned that drinking, smoking, and sexual relationships were affecting the movement and needed to be tackled "politically" "These questions are not moral ones. We cannot just say: 'It is bad to drink too much!' 'It is wrong to sleep around!' These are political questions and must be looked at politically..."

"Are these behaviours compatible with the immediate task of winning freedom for our people?"

The Canadian Government is officially adopting the #IHRA definition of antisemitism, which according to @CIJAinfo includes "anti-Zionism" as well as virtually any criticism of the Israeli government which they consider to be unfair. This is from @CIJAinfo's press release celebrating Canada's adoption of IHRA, where they explicitly say that "anti-Zionism," "double standards," and "demonization" count as antisemitism under the definition. cija.ca/press-release-…

It's pretty funny that @AndrewScheer was asked about 'pizzagate' at a town hall, but don't forget that he mainstreamed conspiracy theories about the UN migrant compact, & he endorsed the yellow vest movement which is plagued by QAnon and Soros conspiracies cbc.ca/news/politics/… Yes, here is the leader of Canada’s official opposition taking a question on “pizzagate” conspiracy theories at a town hall. The audience applauded the question.

An executive of the "uOttawa Students for Free Speech," who was consulted by Doug Ford on changes to student fees, is threatening to sue me for suggesting in a blog that he may hold alt-right ideological views due to his association with Gavin McInnes. scribd.com/document/40028… I'm at a loss at how it is "defamation" to imply that somebody might be alt-right, when they freely associate with alt-right and extremist figures. The "cease-and-desist" gave me less than 72 hours to cough up $2000 and a retraction if I want to prevent a lawsuit.

Suidlanders, one of the main groups promoting the “white genocide in South Africa” myth, recently met with US white supremacist group League of the South. League of the South's Richard Hamblen went on a racist podcast "Political Cesspool" to talk about the month he spent with South African extremist group Suidlanders. Other recent guests include former KKK leader David Duke, & white supremacists Richard Spencer & Jared Taylor.

#AfriForum's Ernst Roets has a dishonest "fact check" regarding what he calls "Fake News," or what I call an accurate critique of his white nationalist politics. I only want to point out a couple of issues: Roets says: "AfriForum does not believe that there is a white genocide happening in South Africa." It's true that they are more careful than they used to be (see FIFA video), but also, here's Roets sharing alt-right propaganda videos about "white genocide."
