Do not use Bill Gates as a motivation for becoming a university dropout. Gates was an exceptional case. He dropped out because he was extraordinary. He did not drop out because he was a struggling undergrad student.
In 1978 at age 23, Gates wrote a paper and published it the next year in Discrete Mathematics. Today, that paper has been cited 350 times because it contained novel information on what is known as ‘pancake sorting.’
