Of course Ortlund is a liberal. It couldn't be more obvious.

I'll grant that he may not be able to understand himself. But that doesn't change objective reality.

He's also using the oldest trick liberals working to subvert conservative Christianity have in their toolkit.

(1/) Image The rhetorical trick actually translates to: "Because I affirm ancient creeds that address issues that aren't currently under assault in a way I could lose anything I value I am free to self-identify as a conservative while yielding all of Christianity to its contemporary opponents."

Been thinking about The Brother Wars & may have figured something out. Hear me out.

I think it is a conflict at root over differing visions of the primary component of masculinity.

I'll sketch it out.

(1/) Image 1. Moscow's primary vision is building structures & institutions that reach into the future. The picture would be a wise architect-general directing the corp of engineers.

A fine point, as far as it goes, but also one that requires context.

1. Durbin is ok w/ fighting Christians. This tweet is a fight against contentious Christians.

2. Almost all fighting between Christians is fighting the world, namely the fighting of worldly incursion.

3. It is actually the church that is the first concern, per 1 Cor. 5:12.

(1/)Image The text is a local-church text, for sure. But it nonetheless prioritizes the church. Therefore...

4. Fighting worldliness in the church, if we have to choose, is more important than, say, debating New Atheists. Both are good but since Durbin set the frame the obvious priority is, well, obvious.

One of the defenses of @GavinOrtlund you'll run into is built on how useful he allegedly is as an apologist, particularly against the Orthodox Church.

It's a complete fabrication. He drives people to Orthodoxy, actually.

Here's what I mean:

1. Every young man I know...

(1/) ...first started on the path to Eastern Orthodoxy because of wokeness. And I know a lot of them. They didn't go because they *wanted* wokeness. They were repulsed by it and wanted a Christian tradition that hadn't fallen for it.

Most powered through Anglicanism quickly...

Heard a phrase again recently that has come to aggravate me to no end.

Let's talk about The Myth of The Church that Wants to Die

(1/) Image I can't count the number of times in the last two decades I have had a conversation about a local church that is struggling - attendance wise, financially - because of aging members where the phrase "That church wants to die" became part of the conversation.

The idea is...

Heath's a good guy but think he puts winds in the sails of the egals by honoring their "concerns" about an SBC purge of their set

1. The worst people in the SBC, her Left, is wanting - an absolutely will - if able, to purge their enemies under the most specious pretexts

(1/)
Image 2. More importantly, why shouldn't the SBC purge people who won't honor even the most clear-cut Biblical commands, not to mention our cooperative confessional basis?

You think some Platform pastor is going to publicly fret about expelling people they want to tone police?

If you ever want to know why it is so hard to root out corruption in the SBC consider the case of Nathan Finn.

He's who ever SBC striver wants to be - a man who will never lack for a job because he's willing to say anything and only what the people writing checks want.

(1/) Finn began as a halfway decent church historian. I think his polygenetic description of Baptist origins is a good one.

Check the date on this.

Today the DOJ vindicated those of us who told you the witch hunt perpetrated under the lie that the SBC had an abuse crisis was a lie.

Entirely.

@DGrantGaines is an idot. @R_Denhollander is a predatory grifter.
@DrMoore is a vindictive liar.

(1/) So is his conspirator @pbethancourt.

@jdgreear is a morally compromised operatives who hypocritically *did* hire someone who covered up abuse.

@bartbarber, @toddbenkert, & their @SBCVoices cronies are fools & betrayers.

And here's the thing: it was never hard to see.

I can't quit thinking of this thread.

It is a Rosetta Stone for understanding the conflict not just in the SBC but evangelicalism (because the SBC *is* evangelicalism in many ways).

Want to know why so many criticize effeminacy & pietism in institutional evangelicalism?

(1/) Bart's thread is wonderfully illustrative.

Argument is seen as dissonant with holy activity & must be kept in quarantine by activities drawn from local church Corporate Worship.

Why? There is no objective, let alone Biblical, reason.

But conflict-aversion is effeminate.

Friends, let me walk through something with y'all.

Say a kid at your family gathering offers everyone a glass of cold water on a hot day.

Another offers grape cola over ice.

A third, more demented, says he wants to drink bleach he refrigerated & the rest of you join him.

(1/) Image Or say you walk around your house to find that a lovely Mockingbird has built a nest in one of the nearby trees.

Around back you find a large, intricate spiderweb with a fat spider at the center.

You also find termite mud tubes snaking up the foundation of your home.

One final anecdote before I leave the @TNBaptist Annual Meeting.

The vote for the next TBC President (the TN equivalent of Bart Barber's role) is the last item of major business.

I was standing at the back of the room with some younger guys as the vote came up.

(1/) One of the guys on the stage commented the fact two men were running for the Presidency did not indicate a lack of unity or presence of division.

I had a laugh about that with one of the guys at the back.

The two candidates?

Three motions at @tnbaptist Annual Meeting today.

Before I show them remember that in TN this year:

A trans psychopath shot multiple children & faculty at a Christian school in Nashville.

An employee of the SBC, living in TN, with direct connections to the school...

(1/) ...has become the singular driving entity on opposing the release of information the shooter intended to express her motivations.

This effort recently cost multiple police officers in Nashville their jobs.

Also in TN that same SBC employee...

To everyone getting a first look (or a fresh look) at how corrupt the SBC is at the purse-string-holders level:

You need to know it is virtually certain nothing comes of this.

This tweet is the signal, S.O.P. - Ignore the controversy, carry on as normal.

Let me explain.

(1/) No one who Bart cares about is upset.

And no one who *is* upset has the ability to make the people Bart cares about upset.

@KevEzell is fine w/ Bart's performance. @JaredCWellman is fine with Bart's actions. Etc. Ad Naseum.

Remember your recent SBC history.

Let's take a minute to talk about Acceptable Sins among soft, morally compromised evangelical men.

Josh here is Very Concerned™ about my describing Callens in clear terms (aqccurately). He says, "My speech is appalling."

Take a look at what Josh *doesn't* find appalling.

You might know I know a little something about Pop Culture (@pccdpod); at minimum I pay attention to it.

Josh? Big Friends fan.

Friends is perhaps *the* definitive show that normalized hook up culture, destigmatized porn use, & mainstreamed sexual licentiousness.

Lots of Tweets flying about the secret origins & hidden influences of Christian Nationalism.

Figured I'd do what I could to put all I can on the table, as forthrightly as possible, so people can hear one story of coming to the position.

Let's start in 2016.

(1/) Image At that point I was a committed Libertarian in the mold of Ron Paul. To this day I hold Ron Paul in the highest regard, in fact. I had been active in the Libertarian Party locally & in hindsight I was a pretty committed Classical Liberal (i.e. I think Dr. Paul is the...)

@husjoshua They're the most corrupt nation attached to the West via NATO & have been for years. It is widely known they facilitate Epstein-style debauchery for Western elites & have for decades. They function as a money-laundering slush fund for the same set, as you see in the Biden..

(1/) @husjoshua ...laptop material. Zelensky is a Western-style debased "entertainer" who clearly functions as a front man for corrupt Western influences.

And the entire Ukraine!!! thing is an obvious Latest Thing that Regime bad guys demand simpletons be concerned about in order...

Yeah, there is. Because what Erik wrote is clearly a product of pragmatic church-growth thinking.

I'll lay it out but, like last time, I'll start by saying I believe Erik is a good guy & pastor, based on mutual friend's reports.

(1/) We need to start by getting the conflict identified. No one in the QTs or replies that I've seen is picking a fight about pragmatism on the thread above. They - and I - did on this thread, though.

Because it is unavoidably pragmatic.

Aesthetics are a matter of Christian faithfulness.

One excellent example can be found in this passage of Humphrey Carpenter's excellent biography of The Inklings, still the best written (apologies & admiration to the Zaleskis, nonetheless).

(1/) Lewis' Oxford at the time was flush w/ new poets, many of whom were homosexuals & gave great care to fashion in their wardrobe (the more things change...).

Lewis' response? To outwardly mark himself as distinct from them by dressing in the opposite direction.

Really good piece from @GShaneMorris.

Particularly strong is his catalog of the long-term societal consequences to intentional barrenness.

I hope it generates renewed attention to fecundity in Christianity.

A couple of points in response.

(1/)

cbmw.org/2022/10/18/a-m… This selection is particularly insightful as it pertains to the PR campaign against fertility among evangelicals. Matthew Lee Anderson comes quickly to mind when you think about prominent figures making childlessness popular.

The obvious follow-up question is...

Friends, you've got to understand the concept of guilt manipulators to understand the evangelical moment we find ourselves in.

This is how betrayers w/in evangelicalism gain traction.

Moore/French. Kendi/Tisby. Du Mez/Miller/Perry.

All of 'em guilt manipulators.

(1/) It boils down to "Someone has it worse, somewhere, than you do so you should feel guilty."

It's a new law, one that is unattainable & which offers not hope of atonement.

And it is everywhere.

Ron Sider gave it to us in its fullest expression.
