in 2020 an incumbent lost in a good economy that weathered a generational crisis. in 2022 the out-party significantly underperformed against an in-party trifecta with 9 percent inflation. independents revolted against the out-party despite poor material conditions the Bush coalition of evangelicals and educated white voters, which delivered robust majorities and favorable SCOTUS, fell apart despite the circumstances being optimal for voters to 'come home'

a significant number of these pieces of legislation have not gone into effect or have been ruled unconstitutional on the basis of legal challenges, several from Biden's DOJ some have but the success rate is lower than most abortion restrictions because so many flagrantly violate the 1st and 14th Amendments

american catholic congregations are on average socially moderate, leaning towards liberal in some cases (at least in terms of policy solutions)

american catholic bishops are on average fucking lunatics reactionaries two papal bulls they don't like away from a schism not really sure how long this dynamic can last

it is in fact possible to acknowledged improvements from the status quo in certain policy areas while maintaining criticism of stagnancy or outright neglect verging on escalation of other policy harms and more people should try it people don't want to hear this but public 'anti-war' voices have turned de-escalation of military conflict into a lose-lose political proposition and that's really bad going forward

people are still getting mad about the center-left tweet lol one of the things that keeps coming up is this idea I think the democrats, who do not support medicare for all, are left-wing, which is a thing I definitely did not say, nor do I believe

the reason the villain was different in the lasr trifecta is the linear passage of time, not a single one of the intransigent conservadems who hampered Obama's first term are in the senate anymore. Several of them are literally dead. 'rotating villain theory' would have, should Dems pull a miracle and get another Biden trifecta, Mark Warner and Chris Coons suddenly adopt the same policy stances of Sinema and Manchin.

i made a lot of really insufferable american anti-exceptionalists very mad today with a post I made while my brain was still warming up, regret nothing the range of false assumptions about my politics, place of residency, and the words i actually said have been pretty extraordinary

just incredibly funny that Biden might win by Obama 08 numbers and the entire conservative project may snatch defeat from the jaws of victory because they couldn't risk pissing off a bunch of car dealership owners they have gotten so fucking close. it's terrifying, but also incredibly funny and narratively satisfying to see them eat shit like they did in 2022 and will almost certainly do in 2024

donald trump's lack of filter, shame, or competent counsel is going to result in an unending spiral of witness tampering that will have years retroactively added to his sentence after sentencing is technically over he'll be livetweeting his own prosecution, racking up process crimes like it's a personal high score

the thing is that there is no evidence of the sort, and assuming that Smith did all the work, versus whoever Garland had working on it, is really silly. it's possible I could be wrong, but my guess continues to be that Smith was appointed to a) streamline the investigation and b) shield it from interference from the House, who could otherwise subpoena and leak damaging information to undermine the investigation

maybe, but the one thing I would consider is that Garland's DOJ is incredibly watertight, and what 'leaks' we might get regarding Garland's strategy or priorities might not actually be reliable or unbiased ones until two days ago, I thought you might have been more right than the Garland truthers. but things kinda changed, and with that, I have to consider the possibility that there is other stuff in the pipeline we just do not know about.

the whole thing with the hammers doesn't count because it didn't happen *during the investigation* was it weird and a bit suspicious? eh, maybe. but it wasn't obstructing investigators

the thing zaid and his travelers like to forget is that *until Trump signed legislation making mishandling classified information a felony* there was a burden of proof of intent that would have been really hard to establish with HRC, hence why hacks like Sessions didn't try like the degree of self-hoisting going on here is amazing

there's literally a grand jury working on this!! i'd love for 1/6 specifically to result in a raft of charges, especially for underlings like Rosen and Eastman, but Trump's complicity in trying to manufacture votes in Georgia is very much under active, criminal scrutiny
