Another note on this mental and emotional energy - in times of trauma, people tend to revert to behaviours and experiences that feel comfortable. When processing global trauma in the way we all are right now, it can genuinely feel draining to try new things. I'm not talking like, full regression levels, but nostalgia and repetition and patterns you recognise are comforting to the human brain. They feel safe, so you're more likely to rewatch your favourite TV show in times of high anxiety than try something new.

I want to talk a little about the danger of false positives in game development.

This isn't meant to be a downer thread, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot and noticing in terms of trends from 2021 and heading into 2022, but spans back a few years. As always, caveats:

✨ Grain of salt this thread. My opinion is not, will not, and has never been gospel, but these are patterns I've seen and think about a lot.

I cannot retweet this hard enough. Doctors are great at diagnosing things when they match the book. But if you're someone who doesn't, you will be told time and time again it's unlikely (like when I got told it was impossible for me to have an ovarian cyst due to age/BC/they're never symptomatic) (1/2)

Piggybacking on this to say - if you're hiring someone, you should OFFER to connect them to your direct reports - ex and present - to discuss your strengths & opportunities as a manager (which should be a frequent and open discussion in general). I have never understood why we put all our stock into people who had power over us down as references. I would much rather hear how you were as a colleague, boss and leader IN CONJUNCTION with those who have managed you, past and present.

Hi, if you like Musical Theater and Irreverent Comedy and you haven't watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend yet, why?

It's one of the best portrayals of mental health and the relationship you have with yourself I've ever watched, with also being completely hilarious. I just finished @Racheldoesstuff book, so I've been totally revisiting how great the entire show was and how it decided to do things differently, entirely from a female gaze, and just say 'fuck it' to everything.

The industry bias against mobile-only games is such a bummer. Prepare for a semi-rant.

You can go to Metacritic and view all games by all platforms for 2020, but you won't find high scoring mobile games. You will however, find mobile games that released cross-platform. In FACT, if you try to start with a list of best mobile games, you can't - it's not even listed as a platform in the dropdown - it's relegated with Stadia when you hit 'more' (I can choose between PS4 and PS5 specifically. Also, sure does look like room for Stadia/iOS there...)

Per LRT: Always send your staff home at closing time - I get being in a flow state and wanting five more minutes. A once off extra hour is fine - but if that once off extra hour is every day: 251 working days = an extra 251 hours you give your company for free over a year. If you get paid $40ph, that's $10,040 you just gave of worth to your organisation for free. You might argue if you're salaried that that's expected. If you're expected to CONSISTENTLY and FREQUENTLY do additional time, you are required to be paid for it.

Don't swindle yourself.

Somehow on my afternoon tea break I fell into remembering Thirteen and the impact that movie had on me and this reflection on it and I just, damn, who else was completely rocked as a teen girl by this film & feeling Seen? Their reflections are so great.

More TV shows/movies written by young people please! So interesting to hear the reflections on it & where the parallels are to my own growing up.

But wait, hold up, what's a USP?

A USP refers to the 'unique selling proposition'. What this means is the thing that is unique about a product that makes it different to competitors and therefore, a reason to purchase it over something else. Every commercial product likely has these, whether they are publicly communicated as a sentence or motto, or woven into the fabric of the branding. One of my favourites is M&Ms - "melts in your mouth, not in your hand." It's specific, makes a claim, & communicates an experience.

Every time a major publication covers a post-mortem like this, future indie developers chances of avoiding the same mistakes die. We need this information circulated, we need to take care of each other, but when this is the cost and perception, no wonder so many avoid it. There is a difference between highlighting a developers discussion and view of a games launch holistically, vs making out like it's just broken out of jail for a murder.

I dreamt I accidentally set off a firework in a record shop and really hurt my knee and the girl who worked there felt bad for me and gave me a bag full of records including a special edition Phantom of the Opera and I was so touched I cried. And then I somehow fell in love with some record shop browsing guy and we went out the back into this random glassy area and talked about breakfast and fireworks and bands and then had to leave and carry like 400 packages and I fell over and my knee really hurt.
