So in light of @Sen_JoeManchin's inflation concerns, how long before we can expect he's in some kind of headspace to support trillion-dollar spending legislation? I pressed him, and ... it could be a while. Manchin says he is looking for a "trajectory" on inflation not a particular number: "Right now we're not going in the right direction .... As soon as we turn the curve and basically show a downward trend, then you're going to be in a much better position."

Manchin coming up live momentarily with @HoppyKercheval. Listen live here: v7player.wostreaming.net/2605 "This is a 50-50 Senate. You all are approaching legislation as if you had 55 or 60 senators or Democrats, and you can do whatever you want. Well, you know what, we're all a little bit diverse. I said, I'm not a Washington Democrat."

Good morning! The Senate is done for 2022 after grinding through nominations until after 4 a.m. this morning. The final tally: nine district judges, 41 ambassadors and several more misc exec nominees. Cloture was invoked on two circuit judges, who will be confirmed in January. Almost all roll call votes overnight were on judges, with the exception of @RahmEmanuel, who was confirmed as ambassador to Japan 48-21. (Only three Dems opposed: Markey, Merkley and Warren. Èight Rs voted to confirm.)

NEW: Bernie Sanders lost his fight to be president. But he’s written a budget that could secure his legacy.
washingtonpost.com/politics/berni… Sanders has long had to battle the notion he's a legislative lightweight -- unfairly, if you ask him. But if Democrats can deliver in the coming month, it would be put permanently to rest. His erstwhile critics are already singing his praises. washingtonpost.com/politics/berni…

Schumer on Manchin & Sinema threatening a reconciliation haircut: "It will have every part of the Biden plan in a big, bold, robust way." Schumer notably did not firmly rule out using reconciliation to handle debt limit. Said Yellen preferred not to and that it is not ideal. But he did not rule it out.

They're gone folks! On voting rights: Action but no progress. Before adjourning, the Senate voted to discharge a voting-rights shell bill. Republicans objected to an immediate vote on that and two other narrower bills. Schumer teed up another procedural vote for the week of Sept. 13. Story to come.

A *very* animated @CoryBooker just rose to thank @SenTuberville for offering a budget amendment that will clear up, for once and for all, that Democrats don't support defunding the police.
He asked for UC to add support for God, country and apple pie. Update:

NEW: In taped conversation, @SenRonJohnson suggests undisclosed FBI role in Jan. 6 attack.

If you have 10 mins and want to understand the mood that has pervaded the House since Jan. 6, watch the whole Rules Cmte exchange last night b/w @RepRaskin and @Rep_Clyde.
There is a subset of Republican members promulgating a false narrative about Jan. 6 and are meanwhile trying to conduct business as usual - pitching their approps amendments in Rules, etc.
And Raskin is among a large group of Dems who are Not. Having. It.

Searing moment from MPD Ofc. Michael Fanone:
"I feel like I went to hell and back ... but now too many people are telling me hell that doesn't exist or that hell actually wasn't that bad. The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful." USCP Ofc. Harry Dunn said he confronted the mob at one point & said he'd voted for Biden. "Does my vote not count?" he recalled saying.
The response:
"This n***** voted for Joe Biden"
"Boo, f-ing n*****"
Dunn describes breaking down after & asking himself: "Is this America?"

With House Rs now voting on Cheney, clear that @GOPLeader made the politically obvious choice: Keep the tent big, even if it's messy inside.
With majority just out of grasp, best to keep both the @mtgreene & @Liz_Cheney wings in the fold, even if it means a 2-yr high-wire act. FINAL TALLY: 145-61, @Liz_Cheney STAYS.
