The nazm was an expression to his unrequited love during college for a Bengali girl who married elsewhere. Though he wrote it in rebound, he couldn't finish it then.

Most of us either remember this song from #War, or as a #PankajUdhas ghazal. But this iconic number comes from Pakistan, & dates back around 55 years!

A thread on its origin & all the times this classic was used in our films #GhungrooTootGaye belongs to Pakistani poet-lyricist Muhammad Aurangzeb, known by his pen name -- #QateelShifai. He first wrote it for a Pak film.
