1/ Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after killing Ravana on Kartika Amavasya to be crowned, lamps were lit in Ayodhya & we celebrate Diwali- so goes the well known tale. But how old is this association? A 🧵 on how Ramayana got intertwined with a harvest festival with vedic roots Ladies Celebrating Diwali, c. 1760, Lucknow (India), Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH, USA. 2/ For starters, the ORIGINAL source - Valmiki Ramayana doesn't mention the EXACT month and /or dates of Ravana's death or lord Rama's return to Ayodhya. But it is replete with exact dates & months for other incidents, for us to make educated guesses.
