Since Odessa voters elected a right-wing city council majority in November, the west Texas town has descended into political gridlock and partisan rancor. During a reporting trip for @TexasMonthly I discovered a city tearing itself apart. Read on! 🧵texasmonthly.com/news-politics/… In 2020 Odessa voters elected Mayor Javier Joven, a 57-year-old small business owner who promised to declare the West Texas town of 115,000 residents a "sanctuary city for the unborn." Two of Joven's allies, Denise Swanner and Matt Matta, were also elected to the council.

SCOOP: For at least six years, a Texas district clerk divided up jurors by race and geography before assigning them to trial panels (venires). The Texas Rangers are investigating and thousands of verdicts could be challenged texasmonthly.com/news-politics/… Rhonda Barchak, a Republican elected official, was the district clerk of Brazoria County, south of Houston, since 2010. She resigned in August and is now under state investigation. Her method of jury selection was highly unusual and possibly violated state law

Just drove by Ted Cruz’s house in Houston. His lights are off but a neighbor told me the block got its power back last night. Also, Ted appears to have left behind the family poodle. Just to clarify, this was taken around 1pm central on Thursday. It's possible Ted brought the poodle back from Cancun with him, or that a family member was staying behind to take care of the dog.
