SHOCKING: The European Union 🇪🇺has been sending millions of dollars to North African nations to dump migrants in the desert.

According to the Washington Post, the EU has sent over $776 million to Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania to destroy all migrants, but some managed to survive.

The funding started in 2015. In 2016, the world witnessed the biggest number of migrant deaths, with over 8,084 people globally, 58% of them from North Africa and the MENA region.

This is one of the most disturbing investigation reports I have discovered. We often blame the West but forget the people they used to carry out these mass murders. Thread:

When this report was published by the Washington Post in May, I expected people to react. But it never made headlines. Today, I bring it back.

An investigation by Lighthouse Reports, supported by media outlets, found that the EU has been aware that its funding for "migration management" has been used to dump people in the desert and brutalize them.

On North African land routes, particularly during the Sahara Desert crossing, 203 deaths were recorded. An additional 825 deaths occurred on Middle Eastern land routes.

Libya registered the highest number of deaths on land routes in North Africa, with 117 fatalities, followed by Algeria (54), Morocco (13), Tunisia (10), and Egypt (9).

All three countries are the final stages of some routes to Europe for migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers fleeing poverty, climate change, or conflict. #ThreadImage (2/4) In 2023, over 8,600 deaths were recorded, with North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa reporting 1,866 deaths, according to the UN Migration.

Many migrants have been put into detention facilities or dumped at desert border areas. In 2023, at least 29 migrants died in the Libyan desert.

Migrants from Guinea reported being chased like animals into the desert, with guns pointed at them, and buses returning empty after dropping them off.

Tunisia also violently expelled hundreds of people, dumping them near Algeria and Libya. A racist speech by Tunisia's president in 2023 sparked attacks against Black Africans.Image

The Colonial Exploitation of Africa’s fossil fuels must stop.

It is a disgrace to see Africa, with fossil fuel exploitation centered on the needs of the West.

Last year Oilwatch Africa – released a report exposing the hypocrisy of the West in the climate change debate.-thread🧵 While new fossil fuel projects should be avoided to keep global warming below 1.5°C, Africa remains a hotspot for Western multinational corporations.
