Happy New Year to everyone except MAT Asphalt!

Today I'm going to explain why I personally am opting out of this settlement. I'm not a lawyer, this isn't advice.

But if you want to do the same, **you only have until January 8th**

MAT Asphalt Agrees To $1.2 Million Class-Action Settlement With McKinley Park Neighbors MAT Asphalt, long a flashpoint of controversy for neighbors due to pollution concerns, has agreed to a payout for residents who live within a half-mile of the facility. by Noah Asimow December 13, 2023 Here's something important: this settlement affects **everyone who lived in this area in the last 5 years**

and unless you opt out, as I am doing, YOU ARE BOUND BY IT EVEN IF YOU DO NOT FILE A CLAIM.

This is, in my opinion, already problematic. Starting at S California Avenue and W 42nd Street, proceed east to S Western Boulevard. Follow S Western Boulevard south to W 43rd Street. Proceed east on W 43rd Street to S Ashland Avenue. Follow S Ashland Avenue north to W 33rd Street. Take W 33rd Street west to S Western Boulevard. Follow S Western Boulevard south to W 35th Street. Follow W 35th Street to S California Avenue. Proceed south on S California Avenue to the starting point at W 42nd Street

So I have combined some publicly available data sources from the city of Chicago, and from what I can tell roughly half (309 / 653) of the schools in CPS NEVER HAD THEIR STREET PLOWED today.

Every orange dot on this map is a school that was not visited by a snow plow 🧵 A simplified dark theme map of Chicago shows hundreds of sma I've compiled the data into a public spreadsheet here, where you can see the plow timestamps by school with a separate sheet for just today, and another sheet showing the earliest timestamps per facility docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

Thread.

Please don't think you're going to be able to filter out all the racism, sexism, ableism, fascism from your kids media. You can't, it's the water we swim in.

You have to inoculate your kids against it by teaching them to identify and critique harmful tropes/frames To be clear this doesn't mean you should let them run wild while YouTube autorecommends fascists.

It just means that trying to protect them by filtering all harmful content is a fool's errand. Plus, what about when they're older?

I think I can safely say this is the most heavily redacted FOIA response I have ever received.

(It's from CDPH re: CPS COVID data) A screenshot shows a PDF where the whole page has been black Outstanding work, much transparency
