A few brief thoughts from my experience of day one of the new 20mph speed limit in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Firstly, despite excitable commentary from the usual RW media, the Welsh economy hasn’t immediately collapsed. There was no panic, no zombie apocalypse… …and almost everyone seemed to take it in their stride and slowed down in those areas where the new limit applies (there are still some 30mph exceptions).

My journey (about 12 miles each way) took in a couple of villages with new 20mph signs, a couple of stretches of 40mph…

🧵 Over the last three days, two conferences concerning the future have taken place.

Naturally, the only one the British media covered was the meeting of cranks, halfwits (hello Lee), racists, neo-fascists, far-right christian fundamentalists and assorted Tory ministers.

But… …there was another conference.

The #BeyondGrowth2023 conference took place in the European Parliament & was a joyous meeting of many of the brightest, most progressive thinkers, political leaders, academics, scientists, economists and activists.

🧵In virtually all news media, it is an unquestioned article of faith that what everyone wants is to pay less tax. I don’t.

Here’s what I want.

I want an economy that recognises and respects the natural boundaries of our Earth. I want a well-funded health and social care system that truly protects all who need it, and I want those who work within that system to be valued and properly rewarded for the incredible work they do.
