When writing/doing analysis or op-eds for the newspaper/mass audience, close to the top, write the "what, where, when" so that even a reader who is completely new to the subject gets some orientation. Then bring the analysis: how, why, so what and/or alternatives.
Going into the weeds right away catches the eye/ear of only to those that already know what happened, where and when. They are a far smaller segment of any audience than you imagine.
