Thread of the best books on the Crusades, by a Crusades historian!
The Crusades, a History, by Jonathan Riley-Smith is the best primer. It is a monumental overview of the crusades’ material and logistical costs, their theological discourse, and the experiences of those involved.
Riley-Smith also has a deep dive into the First Crusade with “The First Crusaders.” This is not so much a history of the first expedition, but of the background of the men and women who conceived and organized it. It is a very compelling prosopographical study.
