Mainly tweet about renewables & politics - as you'd expect from the head of comms @RenewableUK (& @GWECGlobalWind board member). Views my own

🚨New @OpiniumResearch polling being published today which shows that 39% of swing voters think the Conservatives have been more focused on oil & gas than renewables in the last 6 months - and 74% of them have a less favourable view of the party as a result.

And that's not all🧵 Image Regardless of what you think about the Govt's new oil & gas licencing policy, the perception that Govt cares more about oil & gas than renewables & green tech is sinking in, and voters don't seem to like it

That's in part because they feel renewables should be the priority Image

Great piece👇

After days of debate about public attitudes to 'green policies' - new polling shows watering down net zero & green growth ambition couldn't be further from the public mood - and most notably, what swing voters want

🧵with extra analysis
thetimes.co.uk/article/tories… Firstly, the proportion of the public that wants the Govt to do more on climate change, on renewable energy roll out, and on green growth vastly outweighs the proportion who think Government have 'gone too far'.

Most notably, a firm majority of swing voters have this view

🧵for anyone who wants to know

📢Why the UK's wind energy sector is being so vocal about the need for Govt to respond to the EU & USA's green industrial strategies
🏭The scale of potential jobs & investment
⏲️How time limited the opportunity is
🇬🇧How key Government is
1/16 As we all know, the UK, EU, US & many others responded to recent gas price volatility by increasing their renewable energy targets

@GWECGlobalWind estimate 680GW of wind energy will be added globally in the next 5 years. Comparison, all the UK's offshore wind farms = c14GW

Big new announcement - @Ed_Miliband making clear Labour would ringfence £1.8bn to support port infrastructure investment to enable the development of new offshore wind component factories.

1/4 Ed rightly acknowledged that modern turbines are now the size of the shard, with huge blades, foundations and other components.

If we want to build these components in the UK, we're going to have to scale up our ports so they have the space to handle them.

Right, I've made a thread to try and clarify the sheer weight of public, business, civil society and political support for @SimonClarkeMP's onshore wind amendment.

It's enormous.

1/10 The CBI, MakeUK, the FSB & NFU - orgs representing, collectively, our economy - all support onshore wind. It's low cost power that drives billions of £s of investment into the UK

NGOs & civil society groups (e.g. here, the RSPB) again also support 👇

Great to see @Jacob_Rees_Mogg visiting the @Vestas factory on the Isle of Wight.

If I could ask him to do anything on the train home - it'd be to watch back @SCrabbPembs's floating wind debate in Parliament today 👇
parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/e1…

Here's why🧵 Floating wind is essentially how most offshore wind is likely to look in the future

Why? Countries the world over want to build offshore wind farms in deeper, windier waters & everyone thinks it will quickly become as cheap as fixed-bottom tech today

It passed unnoticed, but there was a really significant report into tidal stream yesterday

These aren't lagoons, but devices in the water harnessing tidal flows (e.g. below)

They're set to become game-changingly cost competitive. Cheaper than nuclear🧵
ore.catapult.org.uk/?orecatapultre… The UK is genuinely the world leader in these technologies (see our fancy COP26 video👇) & this summer the Govt confirmed contracts for 4 more projects

Studies have shown they could be providing c11.5GW of our power by 2050 (Hinkley Point C is 3.2GW)

🚨📣Right. Everyone. As this excellent FT article suggests, the onshore wind sector is about to publish its biggest cross-industry report in years.

As the man who drafted it & commissioned all the new research (so know a little bit about it) - these are my key takeaways.

1/9 The number of jobs created by developing 30GW of onshore wind by 2030 is huge, & their location is levelling-up heaven:
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿17,000 jobs in Scotland
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿3,000 in Wales
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿Most of the 6,000 jobs in England set for the North & West Midlands

add to this 30,000 long term roles in O&M
