I suspect the reason Spongebob goes for such consistently over the top acting now is because it's cheaply outsourced. Koreans are paid to just chain together storyboard drawings & the main staff have little control over motion. only way to make it dynamic. here's a "subtle, not too zany" scene fron Shin-chan. save the video & go frame-by-frame if you gotta:
