In the first month I joined I was asked, 'How do I put a firewall between our subnets in AWS?'. What seemed like a simple ask turned into a real deep dive as I got into it. I'll talk about some history here, but first the announcement: aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/insp… 🧵 (1/n) First, VPC was wholly created by AWS in software. I would argue it was one of the first true SDNs of the world, and definitely the largest by almost any measurable quantity. This is low-key exciting - you no longer need to attach an internet gateway to your NAT gateway. I started my career in tech support (Cisco TAC). This had profound effects for me and I feel like getting on a soapbox on the internet (thread) to share my opinion on the relationship between support, really caring about customers, and people's first jobs.
