We had incredible high street youth hubs that, where done well, drew on the expertise of the local VCS with young people involved in commissioning support providers. It was the Connexions service amp.theguardian.com/society/articl… Children & young people could access therapy, housing support, drug & alcohol services, mediation, rights based advocacy, careers advice in a space they co-designed.

Local providers trusted by young people provided specialist support for LGBTQIA+, refugee & asylum seeking or disabled young people.

I’m not against restricting the sale of the knives that do the most harm, this seems sensible. But this continued focus on the weapon not the complex factors that drive violence is seriously misguided in my view.

The focus on rolling out SVROs is also deeply problematic. Whatever the view on these proposed legislative changes & the roll out of Serious Violence Reduction Orders, to announce this commitment with no plan on how to create a fit for purpose CJS is just non-sensical.

There’s a video going round of a ‘rude & angry’ girl on a train that has really got to me. Pay just a little attention & you see the range of emotions probably including shame. See the powerful impact of being laughed at. This is how you hurt people not change their behaviour. She is in a physically confined environment with dozens of people staring, jeering, swearing at her then openly mocking her. She doesn’t seem to be meaningfully supported by anyone to calm or process what’s happening.

More than ever it feels essential to support small businesses, particularly those run by women, are Black or other marginalised group run - especially those who invest profits in doing good. Below (🧵) are some more companies I love who you might want to support. Please add more! I adore @VitaeLondon watches. I’m lucky to have two (both bought in sales) & they are just gorgeous as well as unisex. Stylish, sturdy & they make me feel fab wearing them. Profits support children in sub-Saharan Africa. Image

I’ve been in senior roles in the ‘youth sector’ for over 15 years now so have done a HUGE amount of recruitment for roles spanning volunteers, youth workers, social workers, specialist practitioners etc.

I want to share some tips to help those applying for roles 🧵: Start by looking at the description of the job - is it something you want to do? Does the location work? Are you able to commit to the hours? Does the salary work?

If you have questions, get in touch early & ask, especially if you need flex. Save effort if there really is none.
