Why is China betting on solar AND wind? 🇨🇳☀️🍃

One reason: their output is complementary across the year.

Solar output is higher in the summer, wind output is higher in the winter. Across seasons this gives a relatively flat profile over the year

China's rapid solar growth actually makes this slightly more difficult to show since the seasonal curves are all tilted by growth throughout the year.

This marks a reversal from previous trends.

Simultaneously, there was a small uptick in the US and in the EU.

A thread 🧵 On a global level, wind and solar met and exceeded the growth in electricity demand, particularly as a result of record breaking solar growth.

A fall in hydro negated some of the growth in solar, wind and nuclear, but fossil fuels still saw a small decline.

A storm of malicious incompetence is currently brewing at the US department of energy.

Solar power is rising rapidly and doubled in the last three years ☀️

Back then, the electricity system was 50 times smaller than it is today!

The share of fossil fuels in New Mexico's electricity mix is falling off a cliff. It's down to a record low of 34% as of April.

Just two decades ago, fossil fuels produced 99% of the state's power.

Why you ask?

In April 2023, the two sources were responsible for 65% of New Mexico's power generation.

10 years ago, in April 2013, it was 9.8%.
