Many members of the Chinese and Vietnamese communities feel as though public safety isn't working for them.

"Some communities are feeling over-policed. That's their truth. And others are feeling under-policed. That's their truth." Crimes against Asians have been horrific, and "anti-Blackness" is on the rise "because we live in a system rooted in white supremacy."

@carroll_fife: Both communities have been victimized. "And there's a whole bunch of trauma on both sides"

This is an important moment for Asian Americans that requires healing & solidarity. Across the nation some electeds are seeding division among racial groups. I continue to be angered by what Mayor Schaaf did—taking a space for healing & safety & using it to politically attack me. My budget proposal from last summer would've added funding for Chinatown Ambassadors to our City budget. @APEN4EJ @AsianHealth818 @EBALDC already had ambassadors: escorting seniors to/from dr appts, removing trash/graffiti, getting to know merchants, creating safety.

Read the Governor's statement for accurate info on why the Port of Oakland was chosen to disembark the Grand Princess cruise ship. The federal + state government are conducting a public health mission to ensure the safety of those on the ship + public. oesnews.com/update-on-gran… The ship will only be in Oakland for the disembarkment. No passengers or crew will be released into the general public and no one will be quarantined in Oakland. In times of crisis we must all step up to protect the health + safety of those in need and the general public.
