I wonder if white Americans realize their voting rights are in danger, too? I'm sure some imagine a white nationalist utopia, but the GOP isn't much interested in regular white folks except as shock troops. Troops just follow orders. Nobody in power cares what they want. Well, anyway. Guess they'll figure it out eventually.

Just got invited to a SFF con as a guest. I naturally inquire about their covid policy. What they send me is less than what Discon 3 (30+ cases) required. I say no. Politely, but I'm thinking "Are y'all high?" I honestly have to question how any con can plan in-person right now, or anytime in the future, but ok. You want in-person. If you're not doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to minimize transmission, why are you doing anything?

Finally got my booster today. Let me tell you that I love living in my Black neighborhood... til it's time to access public services like healthcare. (And the post office but that's a diff rant.) It's just a constant saga of multiple trips, weird hours, and unnecessary hurdles. Went to 3 walk-in sites here: no dice. Only 10a - 3p at one, another wasn't open when it should've been, no qualified staff at third. I needed a test a few months back so I visited 2 testing vans. One's staff went on "lunch" for 3 hours. The other had a line down the block.

::equally deep sigh::

@tinytempest nails it. This is Highlander Syndrome ("there can be only a few!"). White supremacy loves to anoint only a handful of marginalized people as Proof Things Have Changed. You know what really proves that? A bunch of new/lesser-known names. That means the ecosystem feeding such anthologies has reached the minimum level of health needed to support new growth. Might not be healthy beyond that; see the lack of Black folks in executive roles, frex. But the pipeline intake is working, at least.

The year I graduated from my Alabama high school, something similar happened; the val was a Black girl who spent freshman year at a (harder) private school. White parents complained til her gpa was unweighted, and a white girl with lower grades got co-val. There's a pattern here. These frequent, predictable, and very much racial conflicts were the inspiration for my short story "Valedictorian."

::sigh:: Have now seen multiple articles about the Broken Earth film deal that framed it as "the pretender to Game of Thrones" or some kind of contest. Can we not? It's not a zero-sum game. People can enjoy more than 1 film, read more than 1 book, etc. Fantasy for everybody! Like, I get that that's just how media works, now. Can't just say "a thing has happened," it's gotta be a more clickbaitey "a THING! will soon DESTROY! another thing!!1!" But just... FFS. This is so tiring.

Just had to explain to an org that I don't want anybody naming awards or literary prizes after me. Awkwaaaaard.

But since it's come up: I've said this in various places over the years, but I'll say it again. Don't name any awards after me! If you're wondering why -- ::gestures at nearly every award in science fiction/fantasy, including several that have been renamed lately:: And granted, some of those folks were reprehensible bigots, etc., while I try not to be. But a) I might fuck up, and b) people change.

There's a thing many orgs do these days, as we continue events online due to covid, that's getting on my nerves: mailing a "handy" equipment kit to speakers so that the event can have slick pro lighting, camera angles, boosted wifi, etc.

I can't tell you how much I haaate this. Spoiler alert: it is not handy. No matter how easy tech folks think it is to rearrange one's workspace and then figure out specialized equipment for the first time, it ain't. And usually there's one (or more!) tech checks to go with the kit. More encroachment on my time.

Using Twitter as mostly "announcements only" means I miss all the good debates now. And I'm okay w/that! But the copyright thing? Again? And focused on trying to leave elderly authors income-less & more vulnerable *instead of* how Disney keeps abusing/influencing the laws? Oof. Is this somebody's disinfo campaign or something? We see the repeated attempts to drive wedges into marginalized communities in order to weaken them. Is this how they're coming at artists? FFS, I'm already tired of it.

This is Highlander syndrome: the idea that there can be only one Black woman excelling at X in a given space. When I first started getting published, I got invited to a panel at Wiscon called "The Next Octavia Butler." Panelists were me and a bunch of other BW, just starting out, who'd ALL been asked if we aspired to be the next Octavia.

I'm never going to understand why "disruption" and statements like "We took the entire (existing, working) model and just threw it out the window" are presumed to be *good ideas* and not a) glaring red flags, and b) con-artist bluster. npr.org/sections/healt… Like, how many US industries have been "disrupted" by annoying buzzword-spouting white people who then go on to personally rake in the cash while blatantly stealing it from employees, the target audience, shareholders, etc? When are we gonna get over this addiction to scams?

...Just heard about That Fanfic Thread. Oof. Since I see some speculation: yes, I still write fanfic. I wouldn't characterize myself as getting my *start* there; I was already a writer by the time I discovered it. It's not "practice" for my original writing, it's its own thing. I flex the same muscles there -- just for fun.

Finally got around to finishing ST: Discovery S3, and man -- so satisfying. There were some plot decisions I disliked and some, idk, directorial beats? I took issue with, but everything else was what I've been craving since this series started. Spoilers in comments, probably! I *loved* that we finally got to know the bridge crew. It was rushed, but that can't be helped; should've happened over all 3 seasons, not just this one. In the last ep there was a shot of each crew member and I still went "Who's that?" re a couple. But better late than never.

::rubs face:: This did not start with Oklahoma City. Jan 6 was not "our Kristallnacht." Folks really need to remember that the US has ALWAYS been fascist when it comes to race. There's a reason the folks in DC brought a noose as their symbol of threat, not a guillotine. This country's got a loooong history of violence against the gov't whenever white supremacy fails to suppress democracy enough. We've had generations of lynchings and bombings. The Wilmington Massacre is a successful example of what the Trumpers tried to do!

But Trumpism is the logical outcome of conservativism. Conservatives have *been* using nationalism, harmful economic policies, & culture-war IDpol to create a two-tier society -- great for them, shit for everyone else -- since the Southern Strategy. Trump's just doing it faster. Like I get that Republicans maybe didn't think that shit through. It might've never occurred to them that shredding the social safety net meant increasing vulnerability to a pandemic, frex. But they see it *now,* so acting like they weren't always headed there seems disingenuous.

Many, many, many thanks to the folks who donated to tonight's gaming stream charity campaign for Feeding America. We're closing out 2020 at $3600, which is amazing. If you still want to contribute (and possibly win a limited edition book!), donate here: tiltify.com/@nkjemisin/a-h… Holy shit, my various gaming charity streams have earned $25,371.29 over the past year! For food banks, mutual aid, Black Girls Code, PPE for medical personnel, and RAICES. Folks -- y'all are amazing. So much.

So fascinating, how certain folks suddenly care about "historical accuracy" in fiction when the Black people show up. I've read novels set in historical periods that featured no women, children, or elderly; none of the reviews noted this. Watched shows set in big American cities -- MY city -- that turned it into young cishet Whitelandia. Not remotely accurate! Never a peep from Team Accuracy.

Thread. I cannot stand Biden. I wanted Castro or Warren, and actually voted for Bernie for whatever good it did given NY's late primary, just to send a message to Dems that they need to shift more progressive. But.

Ok, Twitter. Dad & I have a running dispute about the value of gravy. I think gravy is something you only ask for as a passive-aggressive insult to the cook, to let them know the meat is dry. He thinks it's a compliment -- the meat's so good you want sauce from it. Who's right? Who needs mentions.

It's fascinating to me when people declare it awful that I, an author they admire, have opinions they dislike. It's never stuff like "Genocide is awesome," (to be clear, I do NOT believe this), but oh, "I disagree with you on X." Where X = just about anything. Like, one person got hella mad at me a few days ago because I'm not into sports. A while back someone ranted at me for like 5 tweets because I said something good about an anime they disliked. Somehow "This was great!" turned into "Why do you, N. K. Jemisin, hate women?!"

Yet another very good reason to pay servers a living wage and get rid of this tipping foolishness. As @m_older notes, it's never been about quality of service, but feeding into people's (esp men's) fantasies of being powerful and able to exploit others. Her thread(s) here:
