Ibram Kendi asserts in his memoirs that he was terrified as a high schooler that the Klan was going to break into his bedroom and night and kidnap him

This was circa 2002. Circa 2002 in *Arlington County, Virginia*, at that The only two possibilities? He's (1) severely mentally ill (2) making shit up

I had a Wisconsin colleague back in Richmond and when I asked him what there is to do during the winter up there, and he basically responded with this, though he also helpfully added AND YA KNOW, IN THE BASEMENTDRINK A THIRTY RACK OF PABST WITH YOUR BUDIES '...in the basement? Bu--'

ATOMIC BOMB REVISIONISM THREAD#1

Was Japan Ready to Surrender?

Beginning with this claim since it’s foundational to all others, the taproot of revisionism. This very big claim rests, in the main, on two pieces of documentary evidence (1) the intercepted MAGIC Japanese diplomatic cables

(2) the United States Strategic Bombing Survey (USSBS)

Let’s start with the diplomatic cables—which can only be convincing when viewed out of context by someone who had little to no knowledge w/r/t Imperial Japanese govt

The median American woman has four sexual partners in her life. The median American man? Six. Source: cdc.gov/nchs/nsfg/key_…

For heterosexuals, obviously. Gay men have more. Lesbians have fewer.

There’s this long standing meme, popular on both the more extreme libertarian right as well as the far left, that asserts that as the US became more and more involved in the world, freedom and democracy suffered at home. In reality… …this is not only laughably false, but the complete mirror opposite of what happened IRL. As the US permanently switches form isolationism to internationalism after Pearl Harbor, American society became MORE small-d democratic, MORE small l-liberal, and LESS racist

Please explain how LBJ won relegation (with the biggest popular vote margin in US history to boot) the same year he signed the CRA, and with an opponent who voted against it to boot. Thanks in advance! The death of Jim Crow started way back in the 1930s and was supercharged of course by WWII and television news. By the early 1960s Americans were overwhelmingly against it.

See this man? He’s Majority Leader Dick Saslaw. The Grim Reaper for right wing bills sent over from the now-Wingnut controlled House of Delegates. You thought Mitch McConnell is a ruthless ‘Dr. No?’ Hahahaha he’s got nothing on Saslaw, I mean … Image The Virginia Senate as an institution has extraordinarily arcane and Byzantine legislative rules and traditions, some of which literally date back to the 17th Century. Which is how he’s bottled up every single solitary bad Republican bill despite…

And Southside manufacturing , together w/Southwest coal mining and Shenandoah Valley farming (with Southside tobacco farming thrown in) really was the basis of our economy until quite quite recently. Checkout this ad from Norfolk Western circa 1948 for example Image What becomes the I-95 Corridor—and there was a railway there too—doesn’t even merit a mention! !!

Virginia’s population projection was accurate as far as raw number went but hilariously off base when you look at the county level. They apparently expected Fairfax County to remain a sleepy rural community best known for dairy products. (That factoid about FFX being a dairy farming center explains the ubiquity of little local roadside cream stands all over NOVA, which is still very much a thing today )

American liberals really need to embrace battling the outsourcing of necessary public functions to corrupt nonprofits who seek to grift off of social problems rather than actually solve them. This undermines people’s trust in government which is NOT good for our side!!! It’s straight up Gilded Age style corruption. Though at least with e.g. Wyatt Earp, he was actually putting violent criminals in jail, even if he got paid a handsome user fee per arrest for doing so. So in some ways it’s even worse than frontier sheriffs or Tammany Hall.

The other category of academic historians that have largely avoided the pathologies infecting the academy over the last forty years are the economic historians. Both leftist and right wing. And I mean real economic historians. That do empirical research. Not the ‘New Historians of Capitalism’ whose, uh, ‘leading light’ can’t even calculate GDP correctly

Richmond City isn’t some sterile suburb either (though TBC I think sterile suburbs serve a purpose and have a role). We have a high poverty rate. It’s a minority majority city. There’s a legacy of slavery followed by Jim Crow that’s real. We still don’t have fucking tent cities. Had to point this out because some SF politician was talking about ‘a legacy of racism’ as what’s to blame for their tent cities and I wanted to scream something like…

In Bearded Spock America, the schools’s Guidance Dept wouldn’t have have just sent me an email pleading not to flunk a certain kid. Nah instead we’d have already have made him a human minesweeper in the DMZ or something . Oh who am I kidding? This would’ve happened at the end of his 8th Grade year and I’d have never met him

Jackson actually showed up at Poplar Forest unannounced post-Battle of New Orleans when trying to build the groundwork for a presidential campaign. Jefferson was retired from politics by then and actually purposely avoided…. …as much as possible any domestic political news. But he knew of Jackson due to all the buzz. And as was the custom of Virginia aristocrats you must welcome and entertain any guest who shows up, especially a prominent one. They ate dinner and had some conversation…

On Richmond again having remarkably sane local politics in both the city proper and the two major suburban counties while still being really kinda chill and interesting culturally? Well, I chalk it up to the following: (1) Richmond City has white college educated and/or white Bohemian artsy/music types and a lot of grad degree holders to make things interesting BUT also more than enough working class black Southerners to cancel their worst instincts

Oh yeah and people don't jack off or smoke fent while riding it. Amazing, but true! I ride the PULSE BRT and associated GRTC bus routes when bar hopping or too drunk to drive home. Never once have I seen this sort of behavior. First of all because the GRTC bus drivers wouldn't tolerate that nonsense and everyone damn well knows it. They're a combination of veterans and Southern non-nonsense black ladies. I've seen them stop the bus right there and kick people off for far less.

Way more people on this website need to internalize this fact. Nobody gets tricked here. You may think this lifestyle is subsidized too much. Or maybe that they even have awful, awful taste! Ok, you can argue that. What you can't argue is that there are a whole lotta people out there that don't give two shits about 'walkability.'
